2021 Preakness Stakes: What it is and what to expect

Preakness preview!
Publish Date: 05/11/2021
Fact checked by: Mark Lewis

The middle jewel of the Triple Crown will be happening on May 15 this year. This year is the comeback of the Preakness Stakes as the middle race between the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, after last year’s postponement due to the pandemic.

The 146th Preakness Stakes updates are making the horse racing enthusiasts and bettors excited to know the lineup and winner this year. With the Stakes so close, it’s important to know the basics in order to be prepared for this year’s race. Do not miss out a moment on this year’s race and know what it is and what to expect.

What is the Preakness Stakes 2021?

As mentioned, this year will be the 146th season of the Preakness Stakes. The set date this year is May 15, the third Sunday of May. Contrary to last year’s postponement to October, this year’s stakes will return as the middle of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.

Last year’s race was run by only the race staff, owners, and trainers as an audience. This year, there is limited seating. The other ways that you can follow live updates and streaming is through TV and online streaming. Health and safety protocols are one of the priorities of the race.

The race is held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The competitors are three-year-old thoroughbreds. Usually, those who compete in the Kentucky Derby also compete for the Preakness Stakes. However, some trainers and owners have their horses directly compete in the Preakness Stakes from races other than the Kentucky Derby.

The first-ever Preakness Stakes happened in 1983 at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. This race track is the shortest race track out of all the Triple Crown tracks, with a length of 9.5 furlongs. The pot for the race is $1,500,000, aside from the bet wins.

Betting in the 2021 Preakness Stakes

The traditional way of betting for the Preakness Stakes, and in any horse racing competition in general, is through a teller outside the race track. However, the effect of the pandemic has shifted everything online, online betting is getting more popular.

A lot of betting apps and websites are available nowadays. The best way to bet online is to look for an app or website that is regulated and has good reviews. Take into consideration the fees, methods of funding, and overall customer satisfaction.

Once you have a website or app that you want to bet on, the next thing you should do is to make an account. Prepare all information needed, including your bank details. Next, deposit funding to your account. After, you can now place your bet. Watch out for betting promos online, such as the one provided on TVG site.

Predicted winner

The predicted winner is usually based on their performances on the horses’ previous races. Usually, the winners of the Preakness Stakes are mostly the ones that won in the Kentucky Derby. This is the list of the predicted winners for this year’s race.

  1. Essential Quality

Essential Quality is a three-year-old colt trained by Brad Cox that has already gained immense popularity. He is one of the most favorite of bettors and horse racing enthusiasts alike.

His speed and agility are what make him a race favorite. He is a three-for-three undefeated colt.  Last year was his year,  featuring back-to-back wins in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity and Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

  1. Jackie’s Warrior

Jackie’s Warrior was not a top performer last year in the Breeders’ Cup. However, he kept a decent hold in the races he was in, which makes him an impressive horse. The short resting time of horses can affect their performance but not Jackie’s Warrior.

  1. Keepmeinmind

Keepmeinmind competed in three derby prep races where he placed 3rd, 2nd, and winner in one of those races. He placed third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, where he almost ran as the winner behind Essential Quality, running in 3 ¼ lengths.

  1. Life is Good

Although his experience in derby prep races is small, with only one derby prep race, he has proven that he can win a race in the recent Sham Stakes. People should also not overlook that his trainer is Bob Baffert, and his jockey is Mike Smith, a Hall of Famer duo in the industry.

So far, there is no news of any postponement of the 2021 Preakness Stakes schedule. With the updates about the race, horse racing fanatics and bettors are excited to make their bets and know who will win the 146th Preakness Stakes. Good thing that it is easy to look for a reliable betting app or website, make an account, fund the account, and make a bet.
