The Grueling Truth - Where Legends Speak / Wearing Socks While Sand Walking: What For?

Wearing Socks While Sand Walking: What For?

Why wear socks in the sand?
Publish Date: 02/07/2021

Sand is a tricky terrain that has every chance of ruining your feet unless you come well-prepared. On the bright side, though, it offers a plethora of health benefits. The question is, how do you get the most of exercising on the beach without hurting your feet?

Regular shoes are clearly too bulky and inflexible, and even conventional water shoes are likely to rob you of the tactile bliss that comes with walking on the sand barefoot. Sand volleyball shoes, also commonly referred to as sand socks, might be the answer. Stick around if you wonder what these are and why invest in such a peculiar gear.

What Are Sand Socks

Sand volleyball shoes are essentially socks of varying length made of elastic synthetic materials. It’s a great way of literally wrapping your soles with comfort without compromising the grip.

The key difference between beach socks and traditional beach shoes is that the former don’t have a pronounced sole. Instead, most models utilize the common sock design where the toes and, sometimes, the heel are enhanced.

Benefits of Wearing Socks on the Beach

Walking or jogging barefoot is probably the romantic vignette that most of us imagine at the thought of a perfect vacation. While it does look good, the sand is not something to trust for many reasons. It tends to get sizzling hot when the sun is high, but it is also prone to wrapping your feet in damp cold as temperatures drop — a recipe for either a burn or a runny nose (if not both). A layer of lycra, spandex, or similar dense material, however thin and lightweight, can mitigate the effect. Unlike the socks that we choose for everyday use, which are usually made of water-permeable fabrics that stay wet for a long time, quality beach socks will keep your feet dry and comfortable.

Blisters are another problem that socks can eliminate. What they do is prevent the loose scratchy soil from sticking to your feet and getting between the sole and the ground (or between the toes, which is even worse) as you move. This takes dense material and a close fit, meaning that conventional socks won’t do.

Finally, sock-like volleyball shoes let you stay in contact with nature. By wearing a pair of those, you’ll be able to enjoy a free foot massage without having to put up with unpleasant sensations.

How to Choose the Best Socks for Sand Walking

The thickness of the sole determines the pairs’ life. These are usually made of neoprene and aren’t indestructible, to say the least, so choose one with fatter sole padding. If you expect a lot of irksome scratchy sand or intend to move really vigorously, high-cut socks will work better than their low-cut counterparts. The protection by exclusion can be enhanced if the model comes with an ankle strap. Some have a Velcro to make sure not a single grain gets inside no matter which size your ankle/calf is.

Speaking about sizes, make sure the socks you are considering are true to size because this is a common problem with sand socks.

Boost Your Beach Experience with Sand Socks

Highly elastic shoes made of a dense, fast-drying synthetic fabric with a durable and stable sole padding are a great alternative to traditional beach shoes if you like the massage-like feel of walking on sand barefoot. They offer the best of both worlds by protecting your feet and preserving the natural sensation.
