What’s the difference between Marijuana and Hemp?
There are 2 classifications of the Cannabis Plant:
1. Marijuana: a Cannabis Plant grown to produce large concentrations/yields of
Tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC) for purposes of producing psychoactive (high)
2. Hemp: a Cannabis Plant grown to yield high concentrations of 110+ non-
psychoactive compounds called Cannabinoids (including low amounts of THC) that contribute to human health. These compounds include: essential vitamins,
minerals, omega fatty acids, flavonoids, chlorophyll, terpenes, fiber, protein
NOTE: If the ratio of overall Cannabinoid-concentration to Tetrahydrocannabinol-
concentration is between: 20:1 to 30:1 it is called Hemp; Federal laws require a concentration of less than three percent (<.3%) to be considered Hemp. It is not possible to get high from Hemp. In fact, the non-psychoactive ingredients found in Hemp have been shown to actually reduce the effects of Marijuana or other psychoactive substances.
Does CBD come from Marijuana or Hemp? “CBD” products can be made from (both) Marijuana and Hemp. This is an important point to keep in mind because these “CBDs” have very different effects on the body depending upon the source-type of Cannabis Plant and the related percentage of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): CBDs made from Marijuana will have higher levels of THC and therefore psychoactive (high) effects. CBDs made from Hemp will have low levels of THC and therefore NOT cause psychoactive (high) effects.
Cannabinoids are a group of some 110+ active chemical compounds found in Cannabis
which interact with receptors of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) leading to altered
moods, pain relief, and many other health effects. CBD and THC are the 2 best-known
1. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – Commonly called Marijuana Tetrahydrocannabinol is the psychoactive compound found in Cannabis leaves and flowering tops that produces a “high” effect. When concentrations of less than 3 percent
(<.3%) THC is ingested a beneficial emotional effect (e.g. calming anxiety, up-
regulating energy/mood) is created without causing a high.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabis compound known for its ability to
reduce chronic inflammation, alleviate seizures and increase energy. It is the second
most prominent extract of the Cannabis Sativa L Plant (behind THC).
Endocannabinoid System (please click the link to read about your ECS)
With specialized (CB1 and CB2) receptors in the brain, nervous system, connective
tissues, gonads, glands, organs, immune system, spleen, liver, heart, kidneys, bones,
blood vessels, lymph cells, endocrine glands, and reproductive organs ECS acts like a
bridge between mind and body in promoting and regulating homeostasis. Indeed
ECS manages mood, cognition, memory, motor coordination, motor control, appetite,
pain perception, immune response, temperature, reproduction, sleep, and bone
ECS uses Endocannabinoids (those our body manufactures internally) to signal ECS
receptors. Research shows taking (external) Cannabinoids supports and bolsters our
(internal) Endocannabinoid System by signaling the body to (both) manufacture more
endocannabinoids and build more CB1 and CB2 receptors. Research likewise shows
that having more of these ECS receptors increases our body’s efficiency in using
available Cannabinoids and enhances our baseline of Endocannabinoid activity.
While CBD is the acronym for Cannabidiol, “CBD” is also the umbrella term for the
BROADER category of Cannabis-based products gaining prominence and growing
rapidly in number because of their potential to raise the performance of the
CBD suppliers sell online
Full-Spectrum (or Phytocannabinoid Rich) CBDs which contain all 110+
compounds and have been shown to offer the greatest benefit because
the compounds work synergistically causing an entourage effect in which
the whole (therapeutic contribution) is greater than the sum of the parts.
o Isolate CBDs which are produced by separating Cannabidiol from other
Cannabis compounds in the source plant.
Because CBDs can be made from Marijuana or Hemp it is not possible to make a
“blanket statement” across all products. That said, it must be noted that under the
Farm Bill passed in December 2018 Hemp-based CBDs are legal in every state
1)The hemp contains less than 0.3% THC,
2)The hemp adheres to the shared state-federal regulations
3)The hemp is grown by a properly-licensed grower.
Organic means the produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of
pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or
ionizing radiation. The degree to which a product is organic will vary by producer.
Recommend checking labels.
CBD is inherently vegan. Some producers mix in fish oil, add fructose (gummies) or
other ingredients that disqualify that claim. In short, the degree to which a product is
vegan (or not) will vary by producer. Recommend checking labels.
I have neither used, nor sell and Topical CBD Products but have spoken with a number
of Professional Practitioners who have had good results with patients using them. So
based on that I think there is certainly a place for Topical CBD Products. That said, the greatest benefit of CBD use clearly lies in increasing the performance, efficiency, number of receptors and baseline activity of the Endocannabinoid System. These improvements come from the CBD being absorbed into the blood and for how long. In this regard ingestion of a Full-Spectrum Product will significantly outperform the use of a transdermal cream applied to a localized area of the body.
Many CBD suppliers sell online. This is legal depending on the THC content of the
Product cross-referenced against the laws in your Country, State, or Province.
Path of Purity is available through our Professional Practitioner Network. As this
