8 Signs Of A Hormonal Imbalance

Signs of a hormonal imbalance?

Hormones send chemical signals throughout the human body. They’re the body’s messengers. These chemicals are very influential as they travel through your bloodstream. They tell your organs and tissues how to react and what to do.

Hormones regulate activities, such as reproductivity and metabolism. A hormonal imbalance happens when there’s not enough or there’s too much of a specific hormone, like testosterone. Widespread changes in your body may result from even the smallest hormonal off-balance.

When you feel as if you’re not yourself, it could be one of two things: you’re either just having a bad day or suffering from hormonal imbalance. If you want to know for sure, then read on below for the eight signs of hormonal imbalance.

  • Sleep Problems

It’s normal to sometimes be unable to sleep. However, there could be a bigger problem if you always stare at the ceiling and count sheep for hours before falling asleep every night.

Sleep problems can sometimes be a result of a steep reduction in a particular hormone known as progesterone. The hormone progesterone is known to help humans relax. For women, this occurs a lot before their menstrual cycle each month.

The hormone level changes affect your sleep by making you anxious. It’s best to schedule a meeting with your doctor if you experience sleep problems month after month. Common treatments for hormonal imbalance include bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Most hospitals and some physiatry clinics, like Eastern Idaho Spine, Sports, and Rehab Center, offer this procedure.

  • Chronic Fatigue

While everyone gets tired occasionally, a healthy diet, hydration, and adequate rest make most people feel better. However, it’s not the case for others, especially those suffering from hormonal imbalance.

Chronic fatigue is one of the symptoms of an imbalance in your hormones. So, if you still frequently get exhausted even if you’re taking extra care of yourself, then a comprehensive hormone levels evaluation is something that you may want to consider. Doing so will help rule out hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, and other conditions.

  • Anxiety

Neuroendocrinology is a discipline dedicated to the study of hormones and brain neurotransmitters’ relationship. Researchers in neuroendocrinology have learned that the adrenal glands produce and release norepinephrine and cortisol. These hormones often underlie anxiety in individuals experiencing hormonal imbalance.

  • Weight Gain

People gain weight more as they age. However, sudden and fast weight gain can be a result of several underlying factors, including hormonal imbalance. Getting your thyroid checked is one of the first steps you need to take. Weight gain is actually one of the symptoms of severe hormonal changes because of an out-of-control thyroid.

  • Changes In Skin And Hair

Hormones have a direct influence on the skin’s and hair’s quality and vitality. That’s why brittle nails, hair loss, thinning hair, dry hair, or dry skin may result from thyroid abnormalities.

  • Acne Breakouts

Most people bid goodbye to acne after their teenage years. However, a substantial number of individuals aren’t so lucky to heave that sigh of relief because of adult acne. A disturbed hormonal cycle can be the reason for adult acne in several cases.

Dermatologists believe that odd pimples here and there occur due to hormonal variations, and it’s normal. However, heavy acne that leaves scars is a different story; it’s a cause for concern. If severe acne breakouts trouble you, then it probably because of high levels of androgen. A high number of this male hormone causes regular acne breakouts, among other things.

  • Low Libido

Everyone goes through libido highs and lows. Your sex drive doesn’t have to be full throttle in the bedroom all the time. However, there could be underlying causes if what you’re experiencing is a severe libido loss.

A person’s sex drive can take a nosedive because of hormonal imbalances. That’s according to several studies. For women, it happens when there’s a decrease in estrogen levels. Treatments that doctors will prescribe are an estrogen vaginal cream and other medications.

  • Premenstrual Syndrome

Experts consider PMS (premenstrual syndrome) as a common occurrence during a woman’s monthly menses. An abnormality in the sex hormones’ quality, quantity, or function often causes PMS symptoms. Hormonal imbalance may be present if periods are becoming unpredictable, like too short or too long. Cramping and heavy bleeding can also be signs of changes in your hormones.

Diagnosing Hormonal Imbalance

Endocrinologists will often try to determine if a patient has a hormonal imbalance by ruling things out. That’s because there’s no test or magic formula yet to diagnose the condition conclusively.

How’s your sex drive and performance?  Are you unusually stressed?  Are you sleeping well? Have you gained or lost pounds recently?  This is a series of questions that you can expect your doctor to ask you.

The endocrinologist can determine which further tests to recommend based on your responses to the questions above. The most common tests conducted are a pelvic examination for females, an ultrasound to check various suspect organs or glands, and blood work. You may undergo an X-ray, thyroid scan, MRI, and biopsy if the doctor requires further diagnostics. Sperm count tests may also be performed on men if that’s an issue.

Natural Ways To Balance Your Hormones

There are ways to balance your hormones naturally. They include the following:

  • Manage stress effectively – Allocating some time every day to do stress reducing activities can help.
  • Perform regular physical exercise – Regular exercise is beneficial to hormone regulation by helping reduce insulin levels.
  • Add enough protein to your diet – Proteins don’t only provide essential amino acids, but also affect the release of ghrelin and leptin hormones that control appetite.

  • Consume healthy fat – High-quality natural fat, like nuts, eggs, dark chocolate, avocados, and fatty fish keep hormones in the body in check.

Healthy lifestyle choices and a nutritious diet may help keep your hormones balanced. However, don’t forget that it’s still best to consult your doctor to discuss these things and find out the best way for you to move forward.

Final Thoughts

Hormonal imbalance’s effects can be far-reaching. It can result in a combination of mental and physical health challenges. Consult a licensed health professional immediately if you’re experiencing any of the symptoms discussed above.

The results of your endocrinologist’s determination and your diagnostic examinations will be the basis of the treatment you’ll receive. Aggressive lifestyle changes may also be enough to balance hormones in many cases.
