Former NFL running back LeSean McCoy appears not to be a fan of Eric Bieniemy, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator. Bieniemy has been on many teams’ shortlist as a head coaching candidate the last few years but always comes up short. Many have said race is an issue, but minority candidates have been hired instead of him. So what gives? LeSean McCoy decided to give his opinion on the situation. McCoy stated that the NFL did not hire Bieniemy to be a head coach because of his coaching abilities and not because he is black.
McCoy also criticized Bieniemy’s interactions with players and said that this is why he quit playing for the Chiefs.
“… McCoy stated, “Listen because some players he speaks to them in a certain manner and some players would accept it.” McCoy said, “I wouldn’t take it. It’s like, ‘whoa. “… They hype him up every year to get a job. But when it comes time, no one hires him because they know who he is as a coach.” Many have suggested that Bieniemy does not interview well. While that might be true, McCoy has a little more profound understanding of the Chiefs offensive coordinator since he has played for him.
After splitting his first ten years between the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles, McCoy spent 2019 with the Chiefs. McCoy appeared in 13 games in that season and rushed for 465 yards and four touchdowns, and he also caught 28 passes for 181 yards.
The 33-year old played 35% of Kansas City’s offensive snaps in the 2019 campaign. He was a healthy scratch for one match after Andy Reid, head coach, said that he wasn’t getting any younger and needed some time off for load management. Check out the top new sportsbooks for betting on the NFL!
McCoy seemed to blame Bieniemy, but Reid made a strong point that McCoy could not be as effective at running back at 31 years old. This is likely why he got less playing time.
Bieniemy has been the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator since 2018, after being promoted from running backs coach (2013-17). Bieniemy has led Kansas City to one of the best offenses in the league since he took over. Many wonder why he didn’t get a job as a head coach.
The Chiefs offense was first in scoring and yards during the 2018 season. The team’s offense ranked again first in yards in 2020. It has never been lower than sixth in points and yards under Bieniemy.
Bieniemy was interviewed by the Jacksonville Jaguars (New York Jets), Los Angeles Chargers (LA Chargers), Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Detroit Lions, and the Houston Texans for head coaching vacancies in January 2021. All of them chose to go in a different direction.
Reid has expressed hope that Bieniemy would get a job as a head coach and even believed that the 2022 hiring season would be his year.
However, despite being interviewed for the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos’ openings this offseason, he was not selected over Nathaniel Hackett and Dennis Allen.
Bieniemy could be considered for a head coaching opening if the Chiefs’ offense is again among the best in the NFL by 2022. Perhaps then, Bieniemy will get his chance. Or maybe he is not head coaching material; where there is smoke, there is usually fire.
