6)Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs defense has been the big story nationally, but the resurgence has also been helped by Mahomes, who, after a bad start by his standards, has turned into typical Mahomes as of late. The Chiefs have won seven straight games, and in those games, Mahomes has played better in every game culminating in a vintage performance by Mahomes last Thursday night against the Chargers. The start of Mahomes season makes this hard to pull off, but he could find himself with a shot if they win out and the top 4 falter.

T4)Myles Garrett and TJ Watt

I will combine these two players as they both have outstanding seasons; we all know neither has a real shot, and it’s a shame because both have been dominant on playoff-contending teams who would not have a shot at the playoffs without these two players. It’s been 35 years since a defensive player took home an NFL MVP award — Lawrence Taylor in 1986 — and it’s happened only twice since the award was introduced in 1957.

3)Tom Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Brady was the favorite until Sunday night happened! Brady was shut out for the first time in 15 years — and just the third time ever in a very damaging Sunday Night Football loss. He turned the ball over twice and completed just 26 of 48 passes for 214 yards, and he was beaten by a team playing a wide receiver, a quarterback! The injuries that the Bucs sustained make things even tougher on Brady. On the bright side, if Brady can through the Bucs on his back, he will be hard to be ignored.

2) Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

Rodgers is having a phenomenal year, but what else is new. He is just one touchdown pass away from breaking Brett Favre’s team record for touchdown passes. He completed 23 of 31 passes for 268 yards, three touchdowns, 0 interceptions in a huge road win at Baltimore. The Packers look to be only improving health-wise, which will help Rodgers candidacy.

1) Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts

Most people find it baffling that Rodgers and Brady are ranked over Taylor; Taylor is the epitome of an MVP candidate. If the Colts didn’t have Taylor, they would not be a playoff team. A matchup in Arizona next weekend is a huge showcase game for Taylor; if he goes off and leads the Colts to a win, people will have to take Taylor seriously. A running back has not won the MVP Award since Adrian Peterson did so in 2012. A non-quarterback has been named the league’s Most Valuable Player just three times this century. In the Colts’ 27-17 victory over the Patriots, Taylor went for another 170 yards on 29 carries and put the game away with a 67-yard scoring jaunt just before the two-minute warning. Taylor leads the NFL in rushing by over 400 yards and has scored a remarkable 19 touchdowns; what more could you want?
