In December, the Broncos were fed up with watching their playoff hopes fall after Teddy Bridgewater was hurt. The Seahawks decided to trade Russell Wilson, and George Paton sent a vital package to Seattle to purchase the nine-time Pro Bowler. Although the Broncos will lose two first-rounders, two second-rounders, and three players for Wilson, they have a true superstar at the most crucial position in sports. This is one of the most significant upgrades any team made to any position this offseason. Check out the best bookmakers for betting on the NFL.
The defensive side of the ball was another necessary upgrade the Broncos made this offseason. After almost reaching an agreement with the Cowboys for an extension, Randy Gregory refused to change his language in the contract and joined Denver on a 5-year, $70million deal with $28million guaranteed. D.J.Jones is a highly-rated defensive tackle. Jones last year was with the 49ers’ as an interior defensive lineman, and he signed a $30 million three-year deal. Next, slot corner K’Waun William was signing a $5.2 million, two-year deal. However, the Broncos were able to re-sign Kareem Jack to a one-year contract.
What went wrong? It’s difficult to fault the Broncos for what they did this offseason. While fantasy owners wanted the team to return Javonte Wilkins, they brought back veteran Melvin Gordon. Gordon’s numbers are more impressive than his actual impact. His two longest receptions were on check-downs on the final plays of the half. And his touchdown run against Giants was 70 yards. But it’s difficult to be upset about a $2.5 million one-year contract. Check out the top new sportsbooks for betting on the NFL!
They could do differently: The Broncos sent the No. 9 overall pick to Seattle as part of the Wilson trade. They used their second-round choice on Nik Bonitto. Given Gregory’s history of suspension and that Bradley Chubb hasn’t played a whole year since 2018, I understand the need to have depth at the edge. However, the Broncos could have used their second-round pick on an edge rusher to address the issue by signing someone like Melvin Ingram III or Carl Nassib.
What’s next? The Broncos might look into a new deal with Chubb, who is currently playing out his fifth-year option. It will not be easy to negotiate. I believe they will allow him to exercise the option and give him the franchise tag if it is his career year. In 2018, he looked like a star, with 12 sacks & 21 knockdowns. But he now has 8.5 sacks & 29 knockdowns in the three subsequent campaigns. He was injured in the knee, ankle, and shoulder. He missed 23 games during that stretch.
