The 2021 NFL Draft: Action-Packed Event

Nothing can match the excitement of the potential of what can be. This is what the NFL Draft offers. Until the season begins at least, every team selects new players from the college ranks, each who has the potential to change the fate of their franchise. On April 29th, 2021, the draft will begin, and the most action-packed and enjoyable event of the NFL off-season will get underway.

Last year, the NFL draft gave us young superstars like Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Justin Jefferson, and Jonathan Taylor, all of who had major impacts on their team’s results in their first year, and who will continue to do so for the indefinite future. The NFL draft is where teams find their new cornerstones to build on, allowing them to create a new, brighter future for their franchise.

This year’s draft appears to be stacked, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. The top player in the draft according to just about every analyst worth their salt is Clemson Quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence has accomplished just about everything there is to accomplish in college, winning a National Championship as a Freshman, and leading his team to the playoffs every year he played. He is as surefire as it gets and is all but certain to go to the Jacksonville Jaguars as the first overall pick.

The other Quarterbacks who are poised to go in the top 10 are Ohio State’s leader and phenomenal athlete and passer Justin Fields, BYU’s Zach Wilson, who rose from obscurity to become the presumptive second overall pick, Alabama’s Mac Jones, who led his team to a National Championship and posted one of the most efficient seasons ever, and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance, who has all the physical tools in the world, but stands as the draft’s big unknown due to his level of competition. 

The Running Back class is composed of some high-level talent, but none who are likely to be taken in the top 15 picks. Clemson’s Travis Etienne had a record-breaking career in the ACC and is a do-it-all back. Alabama’s Najee Harris finished as one of Alabama’s greatest backs in their illustrious history, with a 30 Touchdown Senior year. North Carolina’s Javonte Williams is rising up boards due to his capability for lowering his pads and destroying defenders in his path.

The Pass Catchers in this draft are arguably the most talented position group. The group is led by Florida Tight End Kyle Pitts and LSU Wide Receiver Ja’marr Chase. Pitts had 12 receiving touchdowns in 7 games last year and seems to be capable of lining up all over the field and exploiting matchups. Chase sat out last year, but in LSU’s National Championship season, he was arguably their best receiver, even with Justin Jefferson lined up beside him. 

The offensive line group is top-heavy but talented. Oregon’s Penei Sewell is considered to be a can’t miss prospect, who is likely to be an All-Pro and bookend at the Tackle spot. Rashawn Slater from Northwestern is considered just a cut below Sewell, but an elite OT prospect nonetheless. USC’s Alijah Vera-Tucker can play anywhere on the line and has prototypical size. 

Defensively, there are still stars to be found, but the offensive side of the ball is projected to dominate the early part of the draft. Still, in Penn State’s Micah Parsons there’s an every-down Linebacker. Alabama’s Patrick Surtain and South Carolina’s Jaycee Horn are both potential lockdown cornerbacks. Miami’s Gregory Rousseau and Jaelan Phillips could be top-tier pass-rushers. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah out of Notre Dame is a hybrid linebacker who is a marvelous athlete who is exactly what modern coaches are looking for.

The NFL Draft is an action-packed night because you get to watch as player’s, and sometimes team’s, dreams come true.  While there is a lot of wait-time, the excitement of watching your team pick a player who could become a franchise legend is unmatched. No NFL event inspires more intrigue and optimism, so this April 29th, buckle up for the biggest show of the NFL offseason.
