Welcome to the first of what will be a weekly column. The thought came to mind that I get to talk to a lot of people on Twitter, but those conversations usually revolve around sports and sports alone. I’m not vain enough to think that my personal life is that interesting, but everyday life can be. Life and sports often cross paths for me and writing is also in that mix. My goal is to talk about some sports and some daily life.
A week is a loose term. For me, it’s the last seven days and not necessarily a calendar week. I struggled for a long time with the idea of whether Sunday or Monday is really the first day of the week. I figured it out when I spent more time in church.
Right now, it just feels like last Thursday is part of my week. What a game! So much has been said and written about Baker Mayfield. Let me just say that when he came into the game, I felt a surge of optimism. I had a feeling the Browns would win. You know what? I don’t think I’m the only one who felt that. The fans at the stadium probably felt it and the players definitely felt it. That’s how you know you have the right guy out there. I supported Tyrod as the starter, but Baker is ready and he’s the guy we need now.
The euphoria of Thursday’s game was quickly dampened by a look at the clock and the realization that I had to be up for work in five or six hours. I could have called off, but I just don’t do that stuff. Ask my wife. The good news is that I have always felt like I could make it through one day no matter the circumstances. Thank God for Thursday Night Football. If that game was on a Monday, it would have been a long week for me.
I learned this weekend that my college roommate passed away in April. We talked and exchanged numbers a couple years ago, but I was never able to get together with him. Darin was a huge Browns fan. Clay Mathews was his favorite player. Reconnecting with him was special to me. He was my first friend in college and was a great person. I tried calling him again Saturday and this time I was told it was a wrong number. A google search gave me the bad news. Life goes on, but losing a friend and feeling your age isn’t a fun way to spend your weekend.
I spent most of the weekend painting my son’s bedroom. I took the time off from football. It felt good after the Browns win. Unfortunately, I missed some great games. We have Baker now, yet how many people salivate weekly over the thought of Patrick Mahomes playing QB in Cleveland or in their city? There are a lot of talented young signal-callers in the league now. The future of the NFL is bright assuming the league can figure out what a legal tackle of the quarterback looks like. Seeing a frustrated Clay Mathews, III speak after the Packers game was brutal. I don’t see anything wrong with any of his hits that have garnered 15-yard penalties. He’s not a dirty player. Ask a QB.
Clay Mathews, Jr is in the running for the Hall of Fame this year. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some great people to help present the case for Clay’s enshrinement to the voters. I think Clay belongs without a doubt and so does everyone else I’m working with. If you agree, watch your twitter timeline and help us get that word out. We have some great graphics that we’ll make public at the right time.
Has anyone else noticed that when you see LeBron on TV now, you just don’t care? He’s on ESPN constantly. I just see him and I see the All-Star team that plays in another California city and I zone out. I look forward to watching the Cavs play a different brand of basketball. They’ll need time to grow. They’re a long shot to make it very far this season, but we support our teams in Cleveland… always. My wife, Kristin, will be happy that I don’t have to watch all those playoff games.
Speaking of playoffs, the Indians will be in the postseason soon. You have to like how the team looks, but you also have to look at the other teams in the AL. The competition is tough, I mean really, really tough. The Indians will have to be on their game.
Does anyone else have moles? I’ve been fighting them for almost 5 years now. I’ve made some headway. I feel like I’m winning. I just don’t want to proclaim victory. My latest move has been putting Double Bubble in all the freshly torn up areas. That coupled with spikes in the yards that emit a screech that is supposed to drive them away seems to be working. Now I just want to put my yard back together.
Enjoy the Browns win, get some sleep and don’t forget the people who mean something to you.
