The Grueling Truth - Where Legends Speak / Who Survives the Dolphins Cuts on Offense?

Who Survives the Dolphins Cuts on Offense?

What do you think?
Publish Date: 08/26/2018
Fact checked by: Mark Lewis

Let’s look at the Dolphins talent on offense and I will share my thoughts on who will make the team and which players will survive the Dolphins cuts coming up in the next couple weeks.

Ryan Tannehill will obviously be the starting quarterback for the Dolphins this season and he is going into his seventh season as a member of the Dolphins. Tannehill will be entering his sixth season as starting quarterback and big things are expected of him coming off a season where he didn’t play due to a torn ACL. David Fales at this point, in my opinion, is a better option than Brock Osweiler and Bryce Petty as a backup quarterback. Fales seems to be liked by the Dolphins and has talent and should be on the 53-man roster.

The odd men out are Brock Osweiler and Bryce Petty. I’m a fan of Petty just don’t see Miami keeping three quarterbacks.

Kenyan Drake is entering his second year as a Dolphin and I for one expect big things from Drake. In my opinion, he’s probably one of the best raw talents the Dolphins have had a running back in a while. That’s right I said it better than Miller and Ajayi. Drake has better hands then Ajayi and overall is a better talent than Miller.

Frank Gore at this stage of his career is a solid backup for Drake and will be a valuable mentor for Drake and Ballage. I think Gore will be used in a way where he can contribute on the field as well as stay fresh so he is available for all 16 games considering his age.

Kalen Ballage is a raw talent but has no experience and I’m sure Gase will find packages for this rookie to see the field as well. Ballage was a decent college running back and looks to carry that over into the pros. How will Gase use this guy; only time will tell.

The odd men out are Senorise Perry, Jeremy Langford, Brandon Radcliff, and Gregory Howell. Perry has the talent to make this roster, but will the Dolphins keep four halfbacks; I don’t believe they will.

Kenny Stills in my opinion in the most talented wide receiver on this team heading into this season. Each year in Miami he has gotten better and continues to improve. Stills could have an amazing year this season if he can regain the chemistry with Tannehill that they had in 2016 when Stills grabbed 9 touchdowns. Hopefully, Stills can have his first 1,000-yard season this year and be this teams number one wide receiver.

Danny Amendola was a very solid pick up this offseason for the team and a solid addition to this offense. Amendola brings a winning attitude, sure hands, and high motor. He will his teammates accountable accountable for their actions and play this season and be a leader on this team. Throughout the offseason practices, it seems him and Tannehill are forming good chemistry and connecting well. Hopefully, that carries over to when it matters on Sundays.

Devante Parker what else is there to say about Parker but I hope he can learn the difference between being hurt and being injured. Parker has all the talent in the world, but does he have the heart; that is the million dollar question.  If Parker had the heart of the wide receiver that we shipped to Cleveland, he would be a superstar in this league. I want Parker to be a Dolphin beyond this year but we got to ask our self is this his last season to prove himself to the coaches and front office; I think it is.

Albert Wilson is another good pickup this offseason by the front office. If he is used properly he could make us forget about some guy name Jarvis Landry. I think as of right now Wilson is the 2nd best wide receiver on this team heading into the season.

Jakeem Grant will make this roster because of his speed and his grit. He has the potential to be a decent wide receiver in this league and a valuable contributor to this offense. He showed flashes last year as wanting to be more than a return guy. Depending on how Gase uses Grant he will for sure still contribute on special teams and have a big role there and an increased role with this offense. With Stills, Parker, Amendola, and Wilson ahead of Grant how will they find a way to use Grant? Hopefully they do.

Isaiah Ford, in my opinion, has done enough to earn a spot on this team and is probably better than any other receiver that could make this team. I was excited to see Ford in his rookie season but then he ended up missing the entire 2017 season due to an injury Ford could make an impact on this team if a player like Parker isn’t healthy enough to get on the field.

The odd men out are Rashawn Scott, Leonte Carroo, Drew Morgan, Malcolm Lewis, and Francis Owusu. I can see the Dolphins keeping Carroo over Ford but if I had to make the call id go with Ford.

MarQueis Gray has done enough for this team to maybe even open the season as the starting tight end. Each year since he came over from Buffalo I’ve wanted to see more out of Gray but for whatever reason we never get that opportunity to see that. I would have much rather seen Gray play over Julius Thomas last season. Gray is a very solid player and can do big things if given the chance.

AJ Derby I think will make the team as well. I think he can push for the starting job until Gesicki is ready to take over. Derby is an unknown tight end in the league but has had a few good games for the Broncos while he was there.

Mike Gesicki will make the team for the simple reason you don’t cut second-round picks. Gesicki has the talent to be one of the best tight ends this team has seen in a long time. The only knock on Mike seems to be his blocking ability but Gase has him working on this in practice every day.

Durham Smythe was a fourth-round pick in the draft this year and I see him making this roster as well. Smythe is known for his blocking primarily but he has been a sneaky good receiver when given the chance.

The odd men out are Gavin Escobar and Thomas Duarte.

Laremy Tunsil is a former first-round pick that hasn’t quite lived up to his hype. He played his rookie season at left guard and in his second season he played left tackle which is where he will play this season as well. Tunsil needs to take the next step to become a dependable and reliable left tackle.

Josh Sitton is in his first season with the Dolphins as he is coming over from the Chicago Bears needs to continue to be the Josh Sitton of old. Sitton is still one the better guards in the league and I can’t wait to see him suit up for the Miami Dolphins in the regular season.

Daniel Kilgore is coming over to the Dolphins via trade with the 49ers to replace Mike Pouncey. Kilgore is a very solid center and one of the newest talents to help Miami re-build their offensive line. Hopefully, Killgore can stay healthy and play a full season unlike our last center.

Jesse Davis is the sleeping giant of the offensive line this season and I expect big things from him this year.

Ja’waun James is another former first-round pick that was being rumored to being traded this offseason. Miami held on to him for a reason lets hope he takes a big step and protects Tannehill’s right side.

Zach Sterup was signed off Cleveland Browns practice squad last season and he played in 6 games, starting in one of them. I feel he makes the team just because he’s the best option at this position and Miami lacks depth at offensive tackle.

Ted Larsen is a solid veteran that can bring leadership and can still have an impact on the line as a backup. Larsen has had a very solid career in the NFL so far.

Jake Brendel, in my opinion, is a very solid back up center and if asked to play I think he can step in if need be.

Isaac Asiata was drafted in the 5th round last year couldn’t get onto the field in 2017.  Let’s hope Asiata can still contribute in this league and gets it together this year as I think he will make this roster come Week 1.

Sam Young is a talented backup offensive tackle. Miami signed him in 2016 from Jacksonville and Young did have a role on this offense late in the year. Young had to play last year due to injuries and was OK.  Every teams needs good backup linemen and Young is that guy.

The odd men out are Eric Smith, Conner Hilland, Mike Matthews, David Steinmetz, and Roubbens Joseph.
