There are plenty of players in Buffalo that need to prove themselves this year, whether it’s because they want contract extensions or because they are on the hot seat. Sammy Watkins’ fifth-year option was declined, Marcell Dareus has got himself into trouble with the law and the NFL the past two years. And Tyrod Taylor is on another “prove it” deal after the Bills restructured his contract.
The one Bills player that must play out of his mind this year is quarterback Tyrod Taylor. I know that Sammy Watkins is leaning towards bust status, as he hasn’t been able to stay healthy in his career. I also believe that Marcell Dareus needs to stay out of trouble and stay on the field. In Taylor’s situation, he is the leader for the Bills. He signed a monster extension with Buffalo in 2016 and when Sean McDermott came in, he knew he had to restructure the contract. With tension between the Bills and Taylor for many weeks, they were able to come to a restructured contract right before free agency.
Since his arrival in Buffalo, Taylor has passed for 6,058 and 37 touchdowns. For a mobile quarterback who doesn’t like to stay in the pocket, these stats are impressive. On another note, he has also been in a rushing offense that has led the NFL rushing attack. Taylor has been exceptional for the Bills, but he has yet to lead them to the playoffs. Getting Taylor a new contract was a smart move on the Bills part. There was no other quarterback on the free agent market that was as valuable as Taylor, and the Bills did not want to pay the large amounts of money to Taylor that they were originally going to pay.
Taylor is on another deal in which the Bills have the team-option to bring him back next year or let him go. The difference between his old contract and his new one? He has less years on the new one, as well as less money. I think Taylor wants to prove that he can win in Buffalo. Have you ever heard of a quarterback taking a $10 million dollar pay cut?
Taylor needs to win this year, no doubt about it. McDermott has improved the team overall, including on the offensive side. If Watkins can stay off the bench with injuries, and Zay Jones and the rest of the receiving core can get open for Tyrod, they will help Taylor in a big way. The Bills already have the best running game in the league with LeSean McCoy, and now they add Mike Tolbert and Patrick DiMarco to beef it up some more. Buffalo has all the pieces, now they just need to connect. Buffalo’s success and possible trip to the playoffs will determine whether or not Taylor can produce.
