Ranking the NFL’s New Coaching Hires

Ranking the NFL's new head coaches and coordinators

New York Giants: Pat Shurmur, Head Coach

Shurmur was 9-23 with the Cleveland Browns as a Head Coach but lets face it that job is a no-win situation. The advantages with Shurmur for the Giants are that Shurmur is a brilliant offensive mind and the work he did with Quarterback Case Keenum was brilliant this season. Instead of forcing his offensive scheme onto Keenum he fit his system to Keenum’s strengths. He has a veteran Quarterback in Eli Manning and the roster is not bad, but the offensive line needs a complete over haul. While I don’t think this is a great hire I believe that is a solid hire.

Grade B-

Cleveland Browns: Todd Haley, Offensive Coordinator

This is a straight up bad hire! With the talent the Steelers had Haley should not be getting let go. Haley fought with his Quarterback and his play calling was questionable at best. Throw on top of that the hiring of Ken Zampese as the Quarterbacks coach and you have a train wreck waiting to happen. Both Haley and Zampese are both in the old boys network and neither deserve a job in the NFL.

Grade F

Arizona Cardinals: Steve Wilkes, Head Coach

Wilkes has only been a head coach once in his career at Savannah State in 1999. Most of his experience has been as a position coach in the NFL or a defensive coordinator at the collegiate level.. Wilkes apparently blew away the Cardinals in his interview and sealed the job for him. I think Wilkes is a pretty good choice it is a lot better than just recycling an old former coach who in the end will more than likely fail.

Grade B-

Tennessee Titans: Mike Vrabel, Head Coach

The key for Vrabel will be who he hires as an offensive coordinator. I think that Vrabel will get big-time respect in the locker room and with a very talented roster I think this will turn out well for the Titans.

Grade B

Buffalo Bills:

Brian DaBoll, Offensive Coordinator

This is a bad hire and I don’t understand why the Bills have gone in this direction? Brian Daboll has been an offensive coordinator for three teams in the NFL: Browns, Dolphins and Chiefs. In four seasons with those teams, his offenses ranked 32nd, 29th, 22nd and 24th in net yardage. Luckily for DaBoll Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban has a lot of friends in the league. Hell the Crimson Tide offense was mediocre at best. Their is no reason to give this man a job in the NFL again.

Grade F

Seattle Seahawks: Ken Norton, Defensive Coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, Offensive Coordinator

I used to think Pete Carroll was a solid NFL coach, but now I think he has no clue what he is doing. I think with the track record of these two coordinators it’s safe too say the Seahawks will miss the playoffs again next year and they maybe looking for a new coach this time next year.

Atlanta Flacons: Steve Sarkisian, Offensive Coordinator

I knew this isn’t a new hire but it is a stupid rehire. Sarkisian took the number one offense in the league and turned it into the number 15 offensive unit in the league this past season.

Grade D-

Chicago Bears: Matt Nagy, Head Coach

I think this will be a tremendous hire for the Bears. Nagy is a young sharp bright offensive mind and the Chiefs offense really took off this past season when Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid gave up play calling duties and turned them over to Nagy.

Grade A

Oakland Raiders: Jon Gruden, Head Coach

It’s a flashy hire and I think it is a bad move especially with the money the Raiders are paying him. Gruden has been out of the game for a decade and people forget after the Super Bowl Title was won the Bucs were barely over a .500 team the rest of Gruden’s tenure.

Grade C-

Oakland Raiders: Greg Olson, Offensive Coordinator, Paul Guenther, Defensive Coordinator

Olson is a solid hire as is Guenther, but no better than solid.

Grade B-

Cincinnati Bengals: Teryl Austin, Defensive Coordinator

The Bengals with former Defensive Coordinator Paul Guenther were more of a bend don’t break defense. With Austin they will be much more aggressive this is a good hire.

Grade B
