Ranking new NFL Head Coaches!

6). Doug Marrone, Jacksonville Jaguars

This hire is perplexing to me, what exactly has Marrone accomplished to get another head coaching job in the NFL? Sure he had a good season in Buffalo in 2014, but don’t forget he then bailed on the job. The Jaguars should have cleaned house and started from scratch with a new coaching staff. Instead, Marrone has hired his offensive coordinator from 2014 with the Bills, Nathaniel Hackett, and the Jaguarsโ€™ defensive coordinator from 2016, Todd Walsh. Walsh did do a good job with the Jags defense this past year, but I think some new blood is badly needed in Jacksonville.

ย

5). Sean McDermott, Buffalo Bills

I think the Bills made a mistake here, Anthony Lynn should have gotten this job. McDermott did a great job with the defense in Carolina. But, the question that has to be asked is was that more because Ron Rivera was the head coach or was it because of McDermott? I’m sure he will be able to improve defensively on what former Head Coach Rex Ryan had done. On offense is where my questions lie? It looks like the Bills will be parting ways with QB Tyrod Taylor, so you are looking at a new QB and probably a young QB to deal with. I would think a coach like Lynn would be more conduciveย to a situation like the Bills have.

ย

4). Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers

I know I am in the minority here, but I think this is risky by both Shanahan and the 49ers. Shanahan will be working for Jed York which at this point looks like a big-time risk for Shanahan. Shanahan as a head coach I am just not sure about, the advantage here is he is a good QB coach and until the second half of the Super Bowl a good play caller, but there is a big difference between calling plays and running an entire team. Which brings me to my next problem, Shanahan has indicated that he is not going to hire an offensive coordinator, as a head coach in the NFL I think this could be a mistake, more often than not when a Head Coach does this it doesn’t work out very well. A Head Coach has to manage the game and his entire team, and I think being a Coordinator and a Head Coach is just too much to handle especially in your first Head Coaching job. Then you throw in a new G.M. John Lynch, and you have to have serious questions about these two moves. I think this is a 50/50 proposition and if Jed York lets Lynch and Shanahan do their jobs and stays out of it, this has a chance to work out.

ย

3). Vance Joseph, Denver Broncos

Joesph is in the best position of any of these new head coaches to succeed; he has a dominant defense that should keep him in every game. Joseph is an excellent young football coach. The only drawback I see right here is allowing Defensive Coordinatorย Wade Phillips to get away, Phillips is one of the greatest defensive minds in NFL history and could be a huge loss to a very stout defense.

2). Anthony Lynn, Los Angeles Chargers

I love this selection by the Chargers! Lynn is an excellent offensive mind and his specialty is the running game, something Phillip Rivers has rarely had. The main reason I love this selection are the people Lynn is bringing with him to help out. Lynn has hiredย Ken Whisenhunt as his offensive coordinator and bringing Gus Bradley into command the defense is a great move. Lynn is very good at adapting what he does to his personnel. which was seen in Buffalo when he took Tyrod Taylor’s strength’s and built around them. The Chargers are a team that will contend in 2017 because of this hire.

ย

1). Sean McVay, Los Angeles Rams

Will McVay be Bill Cowher or Dave Shula? McVay helped himself by going out and getting a great defensive coordinator in Wade Phillips. McVay has been in Washington the last three years, and Kirk Cousins has improved every year under his tutelage, considering that you would think McVay should be able to help out QB Jared Goff. Overall, I believe that this has a solid chance to work out for the Rams, better than that I think he will have the Rams in the Super Bowl within three years.
