This has the potential to be one of the greatest Running Back drafts in the NFL’s history. You have everything from a big bruising back that will be a 25 carry a game back all the way to a guy like Christian McCaffrey who can do it all.
1) Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State
Height: 6-0 Weight: 203
40 Time: 4.49
Dalvin Cook demonstrated his tremendous speed, vision, cutting ability, and balance in 2016, averaging 6 yards per carry. He was maybe the most impressive back at the combine. Cook is not huge but is capable of running the ball effectively on the inside, and of course, there is no doubt about his ability to get the edge on the outside. There has been some concern with Cook off the field and the people he has surrounded himself with, but talent like Cook’s is rare, and I think that talent makes him a top 10 pick; top 20 in a worse case scenario.
2) Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
Height: 6-1 Weight: 230
Projected 40 Time: 4.51
He did not impress at the combine, as his vertical jump was one of the worst in the Running Back group. Plus he declined to even do the bench press. The Key for Fournette is to be picked by the correct team. He needs to go to a team willing to commit to the run game and plan on giving him 25 touches out of the backfield every game. If a team like that takes him, he just may end up being the most productive of all these guys.
3) Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
Height: 6-1 Weight: 200
40 Time: 4.48
McCaffrey was very impressive at the combine. His ability to jump cut was fantastic. He is a guy that can do it all on a football field and will be highly successful if he goes somewhere where they know how to use a player with his talents. New England would be the perfect landing spot for him. The Patriots are the best at creating mismatches with personnel and McCaffrey is ideal for that type of team.
4) Donnel Pumphrey, RB, San Diego State
Height: 5-8 Weight: 169 Arm: 28.13 Hand: 9.63
40 Time: 4.48
Most everybody thinks size will be the end of Pumphrey; I am not one of those people. Whoever takes Pumphrey will be very pleased, because he might be undersized by conventional standards, but he is larger than most everybody else when you compare the size of his heart to the others. Pumphrey had a great combine and people who are predicting he will not make it in the NFL will be proven wrong.
5) Alvin Kamara, RB, Tennessee
Height: 5-10 Weight: 215
40 Time: 4.56
Kamara had an excellent combine and it showed because his vertical leap was measured at over 39 inches. He is a dynamic, explosive player who can be used anywhere on offense or special teams.
