The Grueling Truth - Where Legends Speak / An NFL Assistant Football Coach Comes Out as Gay and the Whole World Freaks Out

An NFL Assistant Football Coach Comes Out as Gay and the Whole World Freaks Out

Katie Sowers comes out! Why is this a big deal?

Katie Sowers became the second woman to have a full-time NFL coaching gig last month when the 49ers added her to their staff as an offensive assistant. She has also become the NFL’s first openly gay coach. Sowers said it was important for her to come out. I have no problem with a gay coach in the NFL, but my biggest problem is that it gets brought up. Why should it matter? She is a coach in the NFL and the only thing should matter is whether or not she is qualified.

Is Katie Sowers Qualified?

Believe it or not, Sowers has played professional football. She was the quarterback for the Kansas City Titans, who are one of 45 teams in the Women’s Football Alliance. In 2013, she played defensive back for the United States IFAF Women’s World Championship (WWC) team that brought home the gold from Finland. She was also selected for the WWC All-Tournament team and was named game MVP in the Semi-Final win over Germany after snagging five interceptions and returning three for touchdowns.

Ok, she played, but what about her coaching experience? Sowers worked with the Atlanta Falcons wide receivers through the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship last year under Offensive Coordinator and now 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan took Sowers with him to San Francisco when he got the 49ers Head Coaching job.

Sowers has very little coaching experience, but it seems she has friends in high places in the NFL. Atlanta assistant general manager Scott Pioli is a close personal friend that got Sowers through the door in Atlanta. So, she got the internship because of her friendship with Pioli.

She got her first job because she knew Pioli, and truth be told, that’s how a lot of coaches get their first job in the NFL. The NFL has long been known as the Nepotism Football League as several NFL coaches got their first coaching jobs because their fathers, who were head coaches, GAVE them the jobs.

So my conclusion is this, while she may not be qualified to be an NFL coach, she is just one of many. At least her daddy didn’t just give her a job and let’s face it. As a female coach, it is not like a lot of College teams are going to give her a chance.

So, I say good for Katie and maybe if she ever gets a head coaching job, she can hire her daughter as an assistant coach! As for her being gay, I don’t care if she is or she isn’t, as that has no bearing on her coaching ability.

Please stop with the headlines about somebody coming out as gay! They only way we will ever know that it is acceptable to society will be when being gay no longer makes headlines. (By the way, it is only a big deal for TV and news organizations because they think it will get ratings.)
