Megatron at the Oakland Raiders OTAs – What Could It Mean?

Yesterday it was reported that Calvin “Megatron” Johnson was at the Raiders’ organized Team Activities. The visit was clearly stated by the Raiders coaching staff and players as a mentorship training situation. But it had much of the NFL community wondering, “what if?”

So, Really, What If?

After the April 26th offseason transaction that brought Marshawn Lynch out of retirement, is it unreasonable to think that the Oakland front office is making a play to draw another player of that magnitude out of retirement to join the Super Bowl contenders? This comes on the heels of some very pointed comments by the receiver about the poor treatment he received from the Lions. So perhaps that lends to the speculation, as unreasonable as that assumption may be.

The Ultimate Super-Team?

When the news dropped about the legendary visit, the first thing that crossed most people’s minds was that this may be the most unstoppable team in league history. Start with one of the best offensive lines in the business today, add an MVP-caliber quarterback, one of the best running backs that most of us have actually seen in real time and throw in a storied receiver the likes of Calvin Johnson. It’s not only one of the best Madden teams you could ever compile, it’s also unbelievable. Not to mention the fear it would strike in defenses nationwide.

The entirety of his career was spent with a Detroit Lions team that was poor, in terms of success. Even through the adversity, Megatron was able to break records. He’ll always be in the best of the best conversation, so if a man of that caliber joined a team like this young Raiders team, it would be the stuff of legends. Who even needs a defense?

Just a Pipe Dream

The fact of the matter, according to the Raiders, is that Megatron was asked to practice by his former coach, Todd Downing. The new Raiders offensive coordinator coached at Detroit from 2009 to 2013, all during Johnson’s tenure with the team. This is truly a case of knowing the right people at the right time. Unless things start looking more and more like a case of the “Marshawns”, where Johnson misses the game enough to make that kind of drastic decision, it’s nothing more than what it is. Calm down, Raider Nation, fortune doesn’t smile twice in the same spot that quickly. But could it? Keep an eye on it, holding your breath optional.
