The Grueling Truth - Where Legends Speak / Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions Slice Up the Overmatched Green Bay Packers

Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions Slice Up the Overmatched Green Bay Packers

Game: Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions

Game Result: Detroit Lions 30, Green Bay Packers 17

The Green Bay Packers got run over and chased out of their own building in a game that was not as close as 30-17. The Detroit Lions had one drive on the night that didn’t lead to points when Ameer Abdullah lost his first of two fumbles on the night. Matthew Stafford had a field day with the Packers overmatched secondary going 26/33 with 361 yards and two touchdowns. Coming into the game, Brett Hundley needed to take care of the ball if the Packers had a hope to win. He did that having no turnovers on the night, but, whether he’s not ready or head coach Mike McCarthy just doesn’t want to open up the offense, this Packers defense didn’t do anything to lighten his load.

The Packers went down the field on their first drive in 15 plays and got into field goal range for Mason Crosby, but were unsuccessful when new long snapper snapped the ball too low. This would signify the start of a long night for the Packers who struggled on both sides of the ball. The offense had three three and outs on the night. They gained a total of 311 yards on the night as the Lions outgained outgained them by 106 yards. Aaron Jones, who had been impressive in his two previous games as the lead back, underwhelmed on the night. He only had 12 yards on five carries, as Ty Montgomery outperformed him on the night.

The Lions had severe trouble moving the ball on the ground, as they averaged a total of 64 yards on 33 carries. This is troubling against a Packers defense allowing an average of 118 yards per game. However, against a Packers team that features two new starters in the secondary, Matthew Stafford was elite. Due to the Packers lack of a pass rush, Stafford could stand around in the pocket and just wait for his receivers to get open. He was sacked once on the night on the Lions first possession of the second half, and he was rarely ever under pressure.

The Lions defense was plastered to the Packers pass catchers all night. The Packers had four completions over 15 yards. The Lions had six in the first half alone. The vast majority of Brett Hundley’s pass attempts came within five yards of the line of scrimmage, because the Lions were willing to give that. They did that because they could generate pressure on Hundley, which the Packers could not do to Stafford. Until the Packers defense gets its act together, game scores will look very similar to this.

Looking Ahead: In a division that’s looking like a toss-up, both teams are at critical points in their season. The Packers (4-4) head to Chicago (3-5) next week to take on the Bears in a game that is a must win, if they have any hopes of saving their season. The Lions (4-4) for a quick one game homestand against the winless Cleveland Browns (0-8).
