Eating Crow about the Raiders

It’s ok to be wrong. Hell, sometimes it actually feels good to be wrong.

And that’s exactly how I’m feeling right now, as the Oakland Raiders prepare to make their 53 man roster cuts.

After the NFL Draft, I wrote about seventh round pick Treyvon Hester, and I wasn’t very high on the defensive tackle and wasn’t too high on him. I described him as the least exciting pick of the four seventh round picks. I said he was at least a year away from being able to make the team and probably a couple of years away from being able to contribute.

I honestly don’t think it was an outlandish opinion at the time. There’s a reason why Hester fell to the seventh round, most NFL teams saw him in a similar way. But at the end of the day I was still wrong.

I was right about what Hester would bring to the Raiders if successful, I was just wrong on the timeline. I said Hester could be a disruptive force in the opposition backfield but not for a while. As it turns out, Hester is ready to be a disruptive force right now.

Hester has easily been the most exciting story of the preseason, at least from my perspective. One of the biggest issues the Raiders had on defense last season was the inability to get pressure up the gut on passing plays. The edge rushers for the Raiders, Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin are damn good, but they can’t do everything on their own. That’s why the Raiders had the fewest sacks of any team in the NFL last season while also having the Defensive Player of the Year who is an edge guy. Fixing that issue was crucial in my eyes and as the Raiders entered training camp, I believed they did little to improve a critical piece to the puzzle.

But, I was wrong.
