2017 NFL Draft Ranking the Top 5 QB’s UPDATED 3/25/17

2017 NFL Draft Top 5 QB's Updated

1). Deshaun Watson, Clemson Tigers

It looks like the New york Jets have big-time interest in Watson with the sixth pick of the draft.I had Watson ranked number one before the combine and after the combine, I am even more sure of it. He is the most NFL-ready quarterback in this draft class. With most of the college QB’s coming from shotgun/spread offenses, the most important thing to look for is a quarterback’s footwork and Watson was very clean in that area. Handling the 3,5, and 7 step drops can be a problem for a lot of QB’s coming out of college, but that was not the case for Watson. Watson’s combine was all positive.

2). Mitchell Trubisky, North Carolina Tar Heels

Trubisky’s footwork while a Tar Hell left a lot to be desired. He has definitely put in the time to get better in that aspect, showing great improvement in this area at the combine. Trubisky was very fluid which means that footwork has been improved big time and I think with the right QB coach he could develop into a solid player.

3). Deshon Kizer, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

His footwork is spotty last season was spotty at best and he does not throw intermediate routes well at all. He does throw the deep ball well, and the reason I have moved him up to number 3 here is the fact that at his pro day his footwork was markedly better. You can tell from the workout at his pro day that he has been putting in a lot of work to improve. The improved footwork made his intermediate passing much better. I feel a lot better about him than I did before the pro day.

4). Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech Red Raiders

I am still not sold on Mahomes and I think the reasons start with the lack of success that past Red Raiders QB’s have had. There is also the issue of his throwing motion, but with that being said, he has maybe the strongest arm in this class and he is very accurate. He uses his escapability to make throws instead of running, which I also like. All and all Mahomes is starting to grow on me.

5). Josh Dobbs, Tennessee Volunteers

This is a total shock to me that I have Dobbs in my top 5, but he looked very good at the combine. Dobbs’ five step drop takes him a yard or two deeper than all of the QB’s. That would usually lead to the QB looking unnatural but he didn’t. The big deal with this would be the ability to have more room to step up and move around the pocket. He was very accurate and showed nice arm strength. Dobbs will be drafted and whoever gets him may get one of the steals of the draft.
