The Grueling Truth - Where Legends Speak / NFL Free Agency: Winners and Losers of Day One

NFL Free Agency: Winners and Losers of Day One

NFL Free Agency Day One Winners and Losers!
Publish Date: 03/10/2017
Fact checked by: Mike Goodpaster

Yes, yes, I know, it’s only Day One. There’s still time for the winners to screw it up and for the losers to redeem themselves. However, for now, let’s take a look at what happened yesterday.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars crushed day one by landing the best 3-4 defensive end, Calias Campbell. They have their defensive anchor which solidifies a defense filled with talent.

They also added talented cornerback A.J. Bouye, and safety Barry Church.

This defense is stacked (at least on paper) and should be able to help turn this team around.

Tampa Bay Buccaneersย

Teaming DeSean Jackson with Mike Evans is almost unfair. Tampa now has two excellent targetsย for Jameis Winston, and the offense should continue to improve.

On defense, they added Chris Baker from Washington. Tampa is going to make noise in 2017.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns made some good moves today. They re-vamped their offensive line by adding center J.C. Tretter from Green Bay and most notably, guard Kevin Zeitler from Cincinnati.

They brought in receiver Kenny Britt and also made the oddest move in free agency history in attaining another second round pick. (see below)

All in all, it was a superb day for the Browns.

Middle of the Road

Arizona Cardinals

The loss of Campbell is huge. They also lost safety Tony Jefferson but replaced him with veteran Antoine Bethea. They also replaced their kicker by bringing in 43-year-old Phil Dawson.

The Chandler Jones extension was significant and they did re-sign Karlos Dansby.

San Francisco 49ers

This is a work in progress, but they brought several quality players to repair a broken roster.

On offense, they overhauled the receiver corps by signing Pierre Garcon, speedster Marquis Goodwin from Buffalo, DeAndre Carter from New England, and former Falcon Aldrick Robinson.

They also signed the versatile Pro-Bowl fullback Kyle Juszczyk from Baltimore and a good run-blocking tight end and red-zone target in Logan Paulsen.

Robbie Gould was added to replace Phil Dawson at kicker.

Brian Hoyer is the veteran quarterback addition that knows Shanahan’s system and put up a 98.0 rating last year.

On defense, Super Bowl XLVIII MVP linebacker Malcolm Smith was the big defensive signing of the day as he will likely be a starter next to NaVorro Bowman.

We’ll see what they do the rest of the way and in the draft, but it was a good day. Adding Kirk Cousins would have made day one a surefire win.

Chicago Bears

They lost Alshon Jeffrey to Philadelphia, cut Jay Cutler (which was also a win), and brought in Mike Glennon. They should have just stuck with Cutler or Hoyer instead of paying Glennon.

Brock Osweiler

This has to be the craziest move in the history of free agency. The Texans were so desperate to get rid of their $72 million mistakes that they traded him and their second round pick to Cleveland for nothing more than for Cleveland to eat Osweiler’s salary!

Cleveland will try to trade him for a late round 2018 pick, and they promise to eat half his salary! (It’s hard not to laugh as I write this). The Browns do get an additional second round pick, but what a fiasco this is for the Texans.

Washington Redskins

Losing Chris Baker was huge, but they became the first team in NFL history to lose two receivers in the same offseason that both produced 1,000-yard seasons in Jackson and Garcon.

The on-going issues with Kirk Cousins don’t make things any easier.

Green Bay Packers

They lost a good defensive back in Micah Hyde today as the Bills signed him to a long-term deal.

I don’t fault them for not paying J.C. Tretter or for overpaying Nick Perry, but they haven’t shown any urgency on bringing back tight end Jared Cook or guard T.J. Lang. They need both of those guys, and also, they need playmakers on defense.

Ted Thompson can no longer afford to sit on his hands and let all the quality players go to other teams and just rely on the draft to fill the needs. The defense needs a lot of work, and Aaron Rodgers isn’t getting any younger.

Cincinnati Bengals

While they re-signed Dre Kirkpatrick, they lost the two best players on the offensive line. Whitworth was somewhat understandable as the Rams gave the 35-year-old veteran a lot of money, but the Bengals needed to keep Zeitler. They have the cap space, and now Andy Dalton is going to get hit like Blake Bortles, barring some great drafting.
