Hey, Cleveland. The Most Wonderful Time of the Year (known to most fans as the NFL Draft) is closing in on us. And like a kid who got too many great gifts during the two most recent Christmas’, I am keeping my expectations a little lower this year. How many Baker Mayfields and Myles Garretts can there be in one lifetime? It’s true that I am not overcome with my typical frantic emotion this time of year usually brings. Of course, that does not mean I am uninterested. I am willing to bet that John Dorsey has a few aces up his sleeve and when the dust settles, I believe he will pleasantly surprise us.
With this in mind, let’s take a look at a kid I think has a ton of potential and may surprise a few people on draft day, Mack Wilson.
Born February 14, 1998, in Montgomery, Alabama, Mack Wilson has the chance to capture the hearts of many NFL teams by the time draft day comes along. Behind the Devin’s (LSU’s Devin White & TTUN’s Devin Bush) Wilson is considered to be one of the top inside linebackers of this year’s draft class. Wilson played college ball for Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide from 2016-2018, playing in 33 games for the Tide including two starts in the CFB National Championship.
Wilson was effective in his time at Alabama, recording 113 total tackles (59 solo, seven for a loss) six interceptions (one pick-six) and a single sack. Measuring in at the NFL Combine at 6’1, 240 pounds, Mack Wilson has the size to be an effective inside linebacker at the next level. Injuries kept him from participating in many events at the NFL Combine, but some believe that Wilson’s effectiveness at Alabama could see him sneak into the tail end of the first round, but if not it’s certain he’d be a day two pick in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.
Watch for Wilson to be taken by a team running a 3-4 system, Wilson is more of a coverage linebacker than a pass rusher. He has an ability to cover tight ends and running backs effectively in the passing game and has the ball skills to make incredible deflections and can grab interceptions like a receiver. In a defensive heavy draft, Mack Wilson could be a steal for a team especially if he doesn’t go in round one. I believe he’s got good potential and could be a solid starter in the NFL for years to come.
