“It’s a lot slower than I really thought,” Leonard Fournette said after the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 31-24 preseason win over the New England Patriots. “That’s how I’ve been since I first got into the NFL. A lot of people were like, ‘It’s going to be fast.’ But to me, playing in the SEC that kind of helped me a lot. I think to me it was really easy.”
First off, Leonard Fournette has only played in a preseason game, not a regular season game. Of course, that is easier than a regular season game. What could be troubling is the fact that, in that easy game, Fournette averaged less than 4.0 yards a carry.
Fournette was a legend in college against teams that were not that great; the problem Fournette had was the fact that in his three biggest games against Alabama, he ran for just 145 yards on 57 carries –less than three yards a carry. Maybe the most concerning problem for Fournette in college was his tendency to get hurt: All three years, he missed at least some playing time because of injury. And after just one preseason game that he said was easy, Fournette is once again hurt and will miss the Jaguars second preseason game.
Now, if you are Fournette and you truly think the NFL is easy, why not be quiet about it? After this, every NFL defense will have the bull’s eye on Fournette; plus, what’s wrong with being respectful of the game you are playing? I can guarantee Fournette one thing: If he thinks Alabama’s defense was tough, wait until he has to play the Houston Texans. Remember the Patriots held him to 31 yards on nine carries while not playing very many starters…
