With the NFL closer and closer to begin again comes a lot of talk about retirements, free agent speculation and, of course, the draft. This season will be even more special, since it’s the 100th edition.
We love honoring those who have contributed to the game as they call it a day, the rumor mill is exciting and everyone – no exceptions – is gripped by the draft. However, for a change of pace we’re going to appreciate what some of those players served up during the season by running through some of the best teams, players and moments of the 2018 campaign.
5 – Dalvin Cook Gets Low – Week 12
The Minnesota Vikings were facing off against the Green Bay Packers when a simple screen pass gave Dalvin Cook a chance to open his legs, he burst through five of the Packers’ defense to register his first ever NFL touchdown. It had been a long time coming for Cook due to back to back injuries, but he clearly spent plenty of his rehab time dreaming up celebrations. His teammates assembled and Cook got to limbo under them in the end zone.
4 – Remarkable Rodgers – Week 1
Cast your mind back to the season opener and you’ll remember the match between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears. The Bears held a 10-0 advantage when injured Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers left the field in the second quarter. Things went from bad to worse for Rodgers’ teammates and they found themselves staring defeat in the face – they were trailing by 20.
Rodgers returned to the field, effectively on one leg, in the third quarter and turned in a display worthy of winning any game and that’s exactly what it did – Green Bay roared back to triumph 24-23.
3 – Holy Cole – Week 2
Jacksonville Jaguars were taking on the New England Patriots when Keelan Cole produced a catch that left fans and pundits equally gob smacked. Cole has pace to burn but was under the watchful eye of the Patriots’ Eric Rowe when Blake Bortles launched a throw his way but there was no stopping Cole, it was a catch that was meant to be.
Running at full tilt, Cole stretched his arm in an almost impossible fashion before grasping the ball in one hand. Sensational stuff.
2 – A NFL First – Week 11
It’s not every day the NFL serves up something that’s never happened before but that’s what happened when the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs took to the field in November. The match finished 54-51, which is a record scoring game for Monday Night Football but also the first time ever two teams had both scored over 50 points.
The only downside to the enthralling encounter is that it had to come to an end, although, it’s safe to say it will be appearing on highlight reels for generations to come. And breathe.
1 – Marveling at Mahomes – All Season
Patrick Mahomes, whose father of the same name pitched in Major League Baseball, was a round one pick in 2017s draft after coming through the college system at Texas Tech; he spent that year as understudy but Kansas City Chiefs clearly saw enough as they made him the starter in 2018.
Throughout the campaign, Mahomes managed to throw over 5,000 yards with 50 touchdowns to boot, which massively contributed to their number one offensive ranking on Americas line NFL. Oh, and he was named MVP – not bad for your first season as a starter, hey?
That’s your lot folks; five memories from the 2018 season that show why the NFL is so popular – the drama, the skill and the comedy. We can’t wait for the new campaign to kick off and it’s guaranteed to produce many more moments of magic. Enjoy it!
