Hey, all you faithful Browns fans out there! Game 3 of the preseason kicks off this Thursday at 8 p.m. when the Cleveland Browns take on the Philadelphia Eagles. Yes, it is preseason so there’s not much to get excited for, but there are a couple things I got my eye on. The biggest thing for me I’d have to say is the play of the quarterbacks.
One of our franchise’s most recent failures is deciding to pass up drafting QB Carson Wentz. We traded out of the second overall pick to draft Corey Coleman 15th overall when it was all said and done. A recent trade with Buffalo proves that was a huge mistake. Corey Coleman has been injury-prone while Carson Wentz is taking the league by storm. Although he suffered a torn ACL last season, he still put his team in prime position for a Super Bowl run and they won thanks to Nick Foles. Wentz will forever remind Cleveland what we missed out on until we find a quarterback.
Enter Tyrod Taylor and Baker Mayfield.
The season hasn’t even begun yet and it already seems like a whole different team, a whole different atmosphere. When the Browns traded for Taylor, I was shocked and relieved at the same time. I knew he could really help the Browns with his presence of mind, his calm demeanor and his ability to protect the ball. Since that trade the Cleveland Browns have completely revamped this roster with other trades, signing free agents and even having a successful draft.
The quarterback room the Browns now possess has personally given me confidence in this team. I watch a lot of football and I love what Tyrod did last year and even the past couple of years. I’m excited to see what he will bring to this team not only this year but in the future as well. He may not play here long-term, so what he is doing for Baker Mayfield is so crucial right now.
Mayfield is the best looking Browns rookie quarterback I have ever seen. He looks confident and he’s making surprisingly smart decisions for a rookie. He’s staying in the pocket and throwing in tight windows. He is even tucking the ball in and running only when he has to and getting a new set of downs in the process. The best part is you don’t have to throw him into the fire right away. We can actually afford to keep him on the bench while he learns the professional game of football.
Ultimately, I’m anticipating this matchup because I want to see how we stack up to the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. We are a young up-and-coming team and facing the champions would be a great task to see how we compare. I know what Taylor brings to the table so I want to see more of Baker Mayfield. The better he looks the quicker we will all forget about Carson Wentz.
