It was a great week of football last week in the CFL. Two games that could be considered upsets happened with the Argos and Riders winning their games. After week four I’m sitting at 7-5 this season. It seems whatever I pick the Riders to do they do the opposite so luckily they have a bye this week. There are only three games this week with Hamilton, Saskatchewan, and Montreal all on byes. Let’s take a look at who I think will win this week and why.
(3-0) Calgary Stampeders @ (2-1) Ottawa REDBLACKS Thursday 7:30pm ET
The Stamps come off a bye as the only undefeated team in the CFL. Once again they are the class of the league and it looks like it will be hard to beat them without playing perfect defence. Calgary’s defence is unreal this season and they don’t look to have a single weakness. Ottawa is good again this year led by star running back William Powell who leads the league in rushing yards and is third in average yards per carry. I think the only way Ottawa gets past Calgary is if he has a huge game but until someone beats the Stamps I have to pick them.
(1-2) Toronto Argonauts @ (2-2) Edmonton Eskimos Friday 9:00pm ET
The Argos got a big win against Edmonton thanks in large part to James Wilder Jr. who rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown. Now they have to beat the same Eskimos for a second straight week and that will be a difficult challenge. Mike Reilly threw for 370 yards but the Esks couldn’t get their running game going and that was the difference. Ronnie Yell will need to have another big game for Toronto if they are going to go back to back against the Esks. The DB had seven tackles to go along with an interception to pace the Argos defence. I think this will be the game of the week and that Edmonton will get their revenge.
(2-2) Winnipeg Blue Bombers @ (1-2) B.C Lions Saturday 10:00pm ET
The Bombers hammered the Lions last week and I don’t see the rematch being much different. I don’t see anything special about the Lions defence and Jonathan Jennings isn’t a quality starting quarterback and hasn’t been for the last two seasons. Unless Travis Lulay is ready and comes in and dominates The Lions are the worst team in the west in my opinion. The Bombers did the two QB rotation right last week with Matt Nichols and Chris Streveler and Andrew Harris had another big game. The Bombers offence is looking like one of the best in the league. They should roll again this week.
This week is an interesting one. Toronto showed a glimpse of that good team that I think they are but it will be difficult for them to win two straight against Edmonton. If Calgary’s defence keeps playing the way they have been they should take another one against Ottawa and Winnipeg shouldn’t have a problem with a struggling B.C Lions offence. I’ve been wrong before but I feel pretty confident with my picks this week. Thanks for reading.
