This is it. The final week of the CFL season is here. After what has looked like a great week in Edmonton leading up to Grey Cup Sunday we are now just one day away. Last week I went 2-0 in Division Final picks which makes my overall record 51-30 this season straight up. This week is the leagues top two division winners as the Calgary Stampeders battle it out against the Ottawa Redblacks in a 2016 rematch. For Calgary, it is their third straight Grey Cup appearance. They have lost their previous two in pretty devastating fashion and will look to avenge their 2016 loss to Ottawa. For Ottawa, it is their third Grey Cup in the last five years since coming back into the league. They are clearly the beasts of the East. Let’s take a look at how I see Grey Cup 106 playing out.
(1st East) Ottawa Redblacks @ (1st West) Calgary Stampeders Sunday 6:00pm ET
This game is going to be a bloodbath. I truly feel the best two teams in the CFL are matched up on Sunday. For Calgary, they have battled through so many injuries this season and after stumbling through the final third of the regular season, they won the final game of the season to win the division and took care of business against Winnipeg in the West Final to make it back to their third straight Grey Cup. It looks as though they may have some help on the injury front after a scare last week with Eric Rogers looking to have a lower-body injury. However, Twitter tells me that he is expected to play on Sunday. Rogers had three touchdowns in the West Final so him being able to play is a huge boost for the Stamps. DaVaris Daniels could also return to the receiving core this week. He practiced last week but hasn’t played since breaking his collarbone earlier this season. If he plays that is another huge boost for the Stamps but nothing is official yet. The Stamps defence is the real key to a Grey Cup win in my opinion. They are going up against arguably the league’s hottest offence. Trevor Harris threw 6 touchdown passes against Hamilton last week and had only three incompletions. The key to getting Harris off his game is pressure and lots of it. The Stamps excellent defensive line is going to have to have their best game of the season and that is saying a lot. It all starts with Micah Johnson at that defensive tackle position. He is, in my mind, the best defensive tackle in the league and will need to dominate on Sunday. If the Stamps cannot corral Trevor Harris and the high flying pass game it could be another heartbreak for Calgary. For Ottawa, they are going to have to play stout defence and dominate on offence. The defence needs to rein in the league’s best player, Bo Levi Mitchell. Mitchell won the M.O.P for the second time in his career. The Redblacks defence has played well all season, they aren’t quite at the Stamps level but are very good in their own right. They are going to have to have a huge game as you know Bo is going to be dialed in after losing the last two Grey Cup appearances. Star defensive back Jonathan Rose is going to play for Ottawa despite being suspended one game for contacting an official. He appealed and the hearing will not be done in time for Sunday so he will be allowed to play. That is huge for Ottawa as he is their best defensive back. On offence Ottawa will look to continue their great play and guide the team to a second championship in three years. Trevor Harris played unreal last week but Calgary’s defence is a whole different beast. I think running back William Powell will be more of a key to sustaining offensive drives this week. If they can establish the run game it will open up the passing game for the Redblacks and that spells bad news for the Stamps. I think there is two very good teams playing on Sunday and it could come down to the final drive. I think the Stamps play well but the Ottawa Redblacks offence wills them to a second Grey Cup win in three years on a Lewis Ward last-second field goal.
Prediction: Redblacks win 33-31
On paper and from watching these two teams all season the 106th Grey Cup in Edmonton could be an instant classic. These two teams are very sound on both sides of the ball and I don’t see much separating them. Bo Levi Mitchell is this season’s Most Outstanding Player. Lewis Ward won Rookie of the Year and Special Teams Player of the Year. There is studs all over both of these teams and it should be an unreal game on Sunday. I can’t wait to watch. Thanks for reading.
