When we think about the big boys on the line, we lean towards the Cowboys as the best offensive line in the league. I’m not saying they aren’t great, because they are. They’ve helped players like DeMarco Murray, Darren McFadden and Ezekiel Elliot make their mark on the league.
While they are great, the Buffalo Bills offensive line has helped the offense become the number one rushing attack in football for the past two years. Granted, they do have one of the best running backs in football, LeSean McCoy, but if there is no blocking, McCoy doesn’t scare teams. Former Bills running back Mike Gillislee was arguably the best backup in football when he was in Buffalo. Even quarterback Tyrod Taylor rushed for hundreds of yards himself.
The linemen have gone through different obstacles throughout the past two years. Cordy Glenn has been through different injuries, right tackle Jordan Mills has been trying to improve his game and Eric Wood suffered a season-ending leg injury this past season against the Seattle Seahawks. When Ryan Groy stepped up to the plate to replace Wood, he excelled. The Bills even matched the Los Angeles Rams’ offer that they gave to Groy as a restricted free agent.
The Bills ran for 5,062 yards over the past two years, while the opponents that they played against rushed for 3,860 yards over that time. It’s clear that Buffalo is a running team, especially when they were under the control of Rex Ryan. Having a mobile quarterback in Taylor also helps them do well in the running game.
Buffalo looks like they will go after the rushing championship for a third consecutive year after bringing in Patrick DiMarco and Mike Tolbert in free agency. Losing Mike Gillislee will hurt, no doubt about it, but the Bills are looking to move on and keep up their game plan when it comes to the running game.
