Online sports betting was legalized in Canada in summer 2021. However, it’s been a pretty slow process to get each individual province to set up the regulatory framework to police the sports betting realm. It seems that Ontario has been quicker than the rest and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario has been set up to issue licenses to any operator who wishes to put on a sports betting platform.
Prior to this, there were two options for betting on sport in Ontario. One was to use the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s Proline+ betting platform that offered a limited range of parlay betting options. The other option was to use an offshore betting site which is hugely risky as those operators are operating outside of Canadian gambling laws. Thankfully the passing of the sports betting bill has meant that the future is looking bright for sports betting in Ontario.
What we can expect from sports betting in Ontario’s casinos
It has yet to be revealed who will be the recipients of the limited number of sports betting licenses issued by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. However, there’s a strong chance that it could include a blend of online sportsbooks from within and outside of the province, as well as no shortage of Ontario casinos.
Of course, Ontario has plenty of casinos who could be suitable for implementing their own sports betting lounges. From Thunder Bay and Thousand Islands to Windsor and Niagara, there are many contenders for getting that all-important sports betting license.
Many of these casinos like the ones in Brantford and Point Edward are currently operated by OLG. This is the government-run operation behind the Proline+ sports betting platform, and it’s easy to see how simple it would be to include a sports betting service in these casinos.
Plus we should note the fact that Windsor is home to a Caesars casino, and the Caesars Sportsbook has already found great success with its sports betting app in US states such as New York.
Final thoughts: Awaiting legal sports betting in Ontario’s casinos
So it looks like there is good news and bad news. The good news is that it is legal to bet on single sports games in Ontario’s casinos. However, the bad news is that it is looking like this is yet to become a reality.
We’re expecting legal single-game sports betting to go live in Ontario at some point in 2022. This means that you will be able to drive out to one of the many casinos to put down their sports bets, or just play at home via a betting app. All of which shows that sports betting in Ontario is just getting started.
