Mental health isn’t something that you should neglect. As a matter of fact, it has quite a lot of impact on human health. The sad part is that many people don’t consider how disturbed mind can affect athletes as well. When a student gets injured during a game or maybe because of practice then he/she shows an emotional reaction. The possible reaction could be isolation, anger, sadness or maybe irritation but what’s more important is that injuries can also upset an athlete’s mental health. In other words, it doesn’t mean that a student keeps thinking about college homework but it means that there are many other factors affecting mental health. For example, a student-athlete lost a game.
Schools and colleges don’t even conduct motivation classes or arrange a seminar for motivation. It is the purpose of educational institutes to arrange seminars in which they invite expert sports psychologist. Through this session, the student-athlete will not only overcome their mental problems but they will also learn how to tackle problems and stay calm in critical situations.
Taylor Dimmerling (health promotion major and sophomore exercise science) took part in the women’s lacrosse team. She analyzed that mental health is a very important aspect in a human’s life and the case of the student-athlete, they should take it very seriously. Furthermore, she stated that when the speaker came in to talk to all of the student-athletes, it opened their eyes as to how cautious one should be about his/her health.
In the past, many student-athletes suffered from mental stress which leads to some worst consequences. Let’s take the example of Jonathan Meldrum’s life. He told me that he was suffering from mental stress and he thought of committing suicide. He was almost six and a half feet tall and his weight was over three hundred pounds. In addition, he was a college sophomore and between the drill, he had hit someone and after a short time, the fellow hit him back. Meldrum said that he hit him back so hard and he just started breaking up. Moreover, he stated that if he had a gun in his hand, he would have blown his head into pieces.
Student athlete’s mental health is very important because it will not only affect their game but it will also affect their life. Even story novels and TV shows portray how mental problems affect a student’s life. If you read “13 Reasons Why” or watched the TV show then you must have seen how Hannah’s death affected Zackery in his games.
Normally you can spot physical injuries such as fractured bone, wrist injuries, skin burns and many more. If we talk about mental health then it is very difficult to spot. You never know what is going on in other’s mind.
A disturbed mind is very. It leads to many worst situations including deaths, murders, and suicide. You should always talk to your friends or children to check out what they think. Don’t ignore anyone’s mental health because it won’t only affect them but it might affect you as well.
