In a massive American Athletic Conference matchup, the Memphis Tigers take on the UCF Knights.
The Knights come into the game with the Tigers looking to keep an unbeaten record intact and a top 10 ranking in both polls.
Memphis will look to defend home turf Saturday afternoon as they take on UCF. Memphis is looking for an identity after dropping two conference road games at Tulane and Navy.
Memphis has struggled all season long on the defensive side of the ball to find the grind it out football that head coach Mike Norvell has wanted from his team since day one. The Tigers will need the defense to show up on Saturday if they want to contain the high flying explosive UCF offense.
UCF is averaging well over 48 points a game and with that, the Knights are within in the top three for total offense in the country. The Knights average 574 total yards per game and 269 rush yards per game. UCF is one of the most dynamic teams in the country with an attack from both sides of the ball that make opponents have to change on a dime in order to keep up.
Memphis, on the other hand, is very strong on offense, but very weak on defense. Brady White and Darrell Henderson are the faces of the mighty Tiger offense. The Tigers are averaging 547 yards per game and 274 yards on the ground.
On defense, the Tigers are lacking and look to have a monster game on Saturday when they face UCF. The Tigers on average give up 348 yards of total defense, with 172 of those yards on the ground.
After talking with the media this week here is what both coaches had to say about the game on Saturday:
Mike Norvell on the game with UCF-
“You see the experience they have. They have played a lot of football games. Their quarterback is one of the best in the country. I know he is getting mentioned for the Heisman trophy, and I think that is well deserved not just by the way he plays, but by the way he commands the offense. No disrespect to how they played last year because that was impressive, but they are playing faster. They are spreading the football all around the field. I think they are throwing for over 300 yards a game and still rushing for 250. They are explosive in every aspect. Their offensive line is a year older, and they are playing at a dominant stage regardless of who they have played. They played an ACC opponent a few weeks back and were in control from start to finish from a speed aspect and physicality aspect. Defensively, they’ve done a nice job. They have lost a few guys up front but you can tell they have recruited at a high level. They have had some newcomers step up. I think they are only giving up 16 or 17 points per game, and most of that is at the end of contests. It’s a football team that has experience, and even though they have a new coaching staff you can tell they really have a lot of trust in each other. They play well as a team and they are a confident group.”
This game is bound to be an exciting one for not only fans from both teams but also for College Football fans around the country. If Saturday’s game is anything like the AAC Championship game we’re in for a real treat. The Weather might play a huge role in the game with an 80% chance of rain. If it does in fact rain in the 901 the Knights will have the upper hand in the game.
