Week 6 saw 4 teams inside the Top-25 go down and a variety of interesting outcomes across the country. Week 7 gives fans something to chew on with several ranked versus ranked showdowns including 4 within the Top-11. The marquee matchups reside in the SEC and Big-12 but don’t sleep on a few Big Ten & PAC-12 games flying under the radar.
#5 LSU vs. #7 Florida: Both of these proud programs are known for playing rugged defense over the last few decades. They’ve also produced plenty of running back talent to control the clock and let their D-line pin their ears back in route the quarterback. Speaking of QB’s, LSU’s Joe Burrow and three excellent receivers have breathed life into an offense that has lacked explosive pass plays for a very long time. Unfortunately, Florida’s signal-caller Kyle Trask is nursing a sprained ligament in his knee. The bottom line for this cross-divisional SEC matchup is the location. They don’t call Tiger Stadium aka Death Valley “A place where dreams come to die” for nothing.
#6 Oklahoma vs. #11 Texas: The Red-River-Rivalry returns between the Sooners and Longhorns at the prestigious Cotton Bowl. Oklahoma has yet to be truly tested thus far but that should change this Saturday on Fox at high noon Eastern Time. The Longhorn’s injuries on offense and defense continue to pile up. Luckily sophomore RB Keaontay Ingram has filled in nicely of late in a depleted Texas backfield. Transfer QB Jalen Hurts has been a one-man-band for Oklahoma this year, as a dual-threat Hurts leads his team in rushing. This one will be a track meet with an over/under combined score sitting at 76.5.
The Pick: Oklahoma 41 Texas 34
#1 Alabama vs. #24 Texas A&M: Although the Crimson Tide always draws attention, because of a loaded Week 7 schedule this SEC East division is under the radar. The Aggies may indeed have two losses but let us not forget it was to the returning champs in Clemson and a quality ball club in Auburn. Add to that fact Alabama has yet to really face a live opponent and Bama has a super young defensive line starting 4 freshmen this week. This one will be closer than some expect for say a half and some change, but Alabama will roll tide riding the back of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
The Pick: Alabama 33 Texas A&M 20
#10 Penn State travels to #17 Iowa and the fact this game will be played at night in Kinnick Stadium is enough for this podcast to think the Hawkeyes will pull off the upset.
Also, a ranked Virginia Cavaliers squad will beat Miami as a slight road underdog.
#18 ASU vs. Washington State: This PAC-12 matchup is dead even according to the powers that be, making it a perfect fit for a barnburner.
Washington vs. Arizona: The Huskies visit a resurgent Arizona team in an entertaining west coast tilt that may could above the 58.5 over/under numbers.
#13 Oregon will defeat Colorado at home but the Buffaloes can sneak under the 21 points in Las Vegas.
(Honorable Mention: #2 Clemson will definitely be the victor over Florida State but the Seminoles will keep it less then the 27-point spread.)
Take it to the window #8 Wisconsin will cover as a 10.5 point favorite on Michigan State.
-Last Saturday in ‘The Swamp’, Florida RB Lamical Perine put the Auburn game on ice registering the longest touchdown run since Emmitt Smith 1988.
-Ohio State RB K.J. Dobbins led the way with 24 carries for 172 yards as the Buckeyes pounded Michigan State on the ground to the tune of 323 to 67 rushing yards in a 35-7 victory.
-The Michigan Wolverines beat Iowa last week 10-3, out-rushing the Hawkeyes 120 yards to 1.
-The Cincinnati Bearcats upended Central Florida 27-24 ending their streak of 19-straight AAC conference victories.
-Arizona QB Khalil Tate returned from injury in a major way by throwing for 404 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 35-30 win over Colorado.
-Minnesota RB Rodney Smith gained a career high 211 rushing yards in a 40-17 beatdown over Illinois giving the Gophers their 700th win in school history.
-SMU needed 3 overtimes to put away Tulsa 43-37, in doing so the Cougars moved to 6-0 for the first time since 1982.
