1) Style points in Cincinnati
The Bearcats took an excellent SMU team to the woodshed while the Alabama Crimson Tide struggled to get by Arkansas. Will any of this matter? No! It would matter if it were the other way around, but Alabama will stay at number two since it’s not. Cincinnati must be in the top 4 this week, but it will surprise me if they are. The Bearcats best win was by double-digits on the road against Notre Dame, which looks a lot more impressive each week as the Irish start dominating teams.
2) Who has Georgia beat
I know Georgia has dominated the competition, but who have they really beat? Arkansas, and that’s it! The Bulldogs have beaten one ranked team, Arkansas; now they beat the Razorbacks 37-0 while Alabama struggled this past weekend to get past the Razorbacks, but the resume for Georgia is not as impressive as people are telling us. Plus, Head Coach Kirby Smart has been known to choke in big games.
3) Michigan State was way overrated, and so is Michigan
Ohio State beat the brakes off Michigan State, and my guess they will do the same to Michigan, which raises the question of how good the Big Ten is. I have no doubt Ohio State is one of the four best teams in the country, but they lost to an Oregon team that is proving to be more average than playoff-worthy. Michigan and Michigan State are not well-rounded teams, and if you stop the run, you beat them.
4) How was Oregon ever ranked third
Sure, the Ducks beat Ohio State early in the season, but any team that losses to Stanford should not be ranked in the top ten, let alone the top three. Oregon proved that theory true as the Utah Utes destroyed them 38-7 ending the Ducks dreams of a playoff.
5) Is Notre Dame a playoff contender
Maybe? The Irish are playing well and dominating, but the competition is not good enough to jump ahead of a Cincinnati team that has already beaten them. So with that being the case, the Irish need help, and they got some yesterday with an Oregon loss. Another Alabama loss would suddenly put Notre Dame firmly in the race for a spot in the playoff.
6) SEC schedules in November are a joke
Last week we got Alabama vs New Mexico State, followed up with this weekend’s titanic matchups as Texas A&M beat up on Praire View, and Charleston Southern was fed to Georgia! Something has to be done about this, and the SEC teams doing it need to be penalized for it. The SEC gets to play one less in conference game than every other conference, and the results are these horrific mismatches that should not be happening, especially in November.
7) BYU is a top 10 team
I will say it right now! If BYU were in the Pac 12, they would win it! The Cougars beat Utah earlier in the season, and I will tell you that they are better than a team like Michigan State, and if Cincinnati makes the playoffs, then BYU should play on New Year’s Day because they deserve to.
