Every year futures bets are a huge favorite of bettors and of course, it’s easy to pick Alabama or Clemson, but is it really worth it with 5-2 odds? No, of course not! So today I thought we would look at three teams with long odds that could have a real shot to win it all.
1) Miami Hurricanes
Last year the defense was championship worthy but the offense was pathetic. The defense should remain the strength of the team with new Head Coach Manny Diaz taking the reigns for the Hurricanes. They will be led by an experienced Linebacker corps that will be as good as any in the country.
With new offensive coordinator Dan Enos guiding the offense and some solid choices at the starting Quarterback position, this offense could turn around quickly in Miami. The Hurricanes schedule after a week one battle with Florida has no opponents slated to start the season in the pre-season top-25, and with the name recognition of the U, this team could be highly ranked headed to the ACC Championship game. Of course, that game is the big roadblock in all of this, but the old adage is defense wins championships, so why not take a chance on the Canes?
2) Nebraska Cornhuskers
I know you think I am nuts! Maybe I am, but remember we are looking for great value plays and with Scott Frost, at the helm, it’s only a matter of time before the Huskers are once again a big-time program.
Sophomore Quarterback Adrian Martinez is another huge reason for optimism in Lincoln because he is a threat with his legs and arms, and with a Scott Frost offense, the sky could be the limit this year for the Huskers. The defense is probably the biggest concern. What will really bolster the once proud Nebraska defense will be the offseason additions they have gotten and the biggest may be former Oklahoma State defensive tackle transfer Darrion Daniels who should help the unit right away. Plus, other than a cross-divisional matchup with Ohio State, the schedule is pretty favorable with Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Iowa traveling to Lincoln.
The Big Ten does not look to be loaded this year and the Huskers could definitely break through this season.
3) Arizona Wildcats
Khalil Tate and a reasonably favorable schedule of Hawaii, Northern Arizona and Texas Tech (with a new HC and lots of roster turnover) in the non-conference isn’t exactly a tough schedule. And while games against Washington and Oregon in the cross-division schedule could cause problems, the Wildcats do have well-timed byes: Before the start of conference play and before a three-game stretch against Oregon, Utah and Arizona State to end the season. This one is a real long-shot to me, but they have what looks like a legit Quarterback so let’s take a shot here?
College Futures Betting
I am not telling you to bet Arizona, Miami, or Nebraska to win a National Championship, but a futures bet on winning a conference championship would be a great bet on all three teams. The perfect place to bet that College Futures bet would be right here.
