Will There Be Mobile Sports Betting in Ontario?

Publish Date: 02/23/2022
Fact checked by: Jennifer Adams

Mobile betting is coming to Ontario. This is because big changes are underway in how sports betting works in the province. Keep reading to find out more!

Not only can you put down mobile sports bets right now on a government-owned betting platform, but there’s a whole host of commercial betting apps set to launch in Ontario in 2022. So join us as we see how the province is getting ready for a mobile betting revolution!

The current state of Ontario mobile sports betting

As it stands, there are two fairly limited options for mobile sports betting in Ontario. This either means using the government-owned OLG Proline+ betting service or using one of the various offshore betting sites.

Of these, the Proline+ service is very limited and the offshore betting sites are illegal and offer nothing in the way of customer protection. Thankfully things are changing and Ontario sports fans now can look forward to the arrival of some awesome commercial sports betting apps.

Welcoming commercial sports betting apps to Ontario

Ever since the sports betting bill C-218 was passed in Canadian Parliament last summer, there has been a race to see which province would launch legal online sports betting. There was no surprise when Ontario declared itself the first province to permit commercial online sportsbooks and the whole thing is scheduled to kick off on April 4, 2022.

From here, people in Ontario will get the opportunity to bet on sport at a number of different operators who will all be licensed and regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. What’s notable is the fact that these betting platforms are expected to be fully mobile-friendly.

This means that there might be a chance to download a specific sportsbook app that would allow betting on hundreds of different odds for anything from the NHL to the NBA. The alternative would be to simply play at a mobile-friendly version of the website via the browser of your smartphone or tablet.

What will Ontario sports betting apps look like?

Judging from what’s happened to sports betting apps south of the border, we’d expect that all sportsbooks will make sure that their apps are available for iOS and Android devices. Plus we’d expect that each sportsbook app would feature geolocation software to make sure that you are only betting from within Ontario state borders.

Beyond this, each app will behave like a regular sports betting site except that the whole thing will fit in the palm of your hand. This means being able to swipe through the betting odds for teams like Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Redblacks and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. And putting down prematch and live bets direct from the app.

Away from the betting options, sign up to the sportsbook can be done directly from the app itself. Youwill have to show proof of age – that’s 19 years old, the minimum age for gambling in Ontario.

From here, the first deposit can be made with a variety of payment providers from Visa and Mastercard cards to an Interac bank transfer. And it can safely be expected that a long list of payment methods will be offered as part of the sign up procedure!
