Lomachenko Versus Rigondeaux: Don’t Swing and Miss

Pedro Diaz, Guillermo Rigondeaux’s trainer, was recently quoted as wanting a showdown between his man and budding superstar, Vasyl Lomachenko, at 126.

Previous negotiations never seemed to get past the verbal stage, I think, to the detriment of us all. Rigondeaux and Lomachenko both settled for lesser fighters while waiting for one of their fellow classmen to step up to the plate. Meanwhile they could have squared off and given us one of the most intriguing small-man fights in recent history.

That’s all behind us now, but the fight itself doesn’t have to be. There are a mere four pounds separating these men and granted the promoters wanted to get it done, they could. That’s always been the case.

Of course, one can never be quite sure of what Lomachenko’s promoter Bob Arum wants, well, besides an endless stream of incestuous matchmaking for WBO titles. He did call this potential bout a “shit fight”. But this is all while he lines up a cheap imitation in Jezreel Corrales for “Hi-Tech”, and throws together uninteresting mismatches like Terence Crawford vs. John Molina.

Maybe money is the concern, though I can’t see why. Rigondeaux may get the occasional verbal thrashing from fans and writers alike, but he is a bigger sell than Corrales, and he’s certainly more skillful.

Rigondeaux is one of the few who poses a risk to the sublimely skilled Ukrainian. That’s a hefty statement when you consider the talent surrounding Lomachenko, especially at featherweight. Seeing as it is unlikely Vasyl is granted a contest with a sizable number of guys because of promotional issues and whatnot, Rigondeaux makes even more sense.

A big chance is here. A chance for boxing purists to get a fight they desire and receive some closure so we don’t have to debate about who would emerge victorious in some group or forum somewhere down the line.

Get to the negotiating table and take a swing at this. Don’t miss.
