The Grueling Truth - Where Legends Speak / Jamie Weetch Interview: Welsh Dragon Fire in Australia

Jamie Weetch Interview: Welsh Dragon Fire in Australia

The Weetch
Publish Date: 11/04/2017
Fact checked by: Mike Goodpaster
Jamie Weetch and Justin Lacey

After a solid amateur career in Wales, UK, Jamie Weetch decided to emigrate to Australia. He settled there and turned professional, on the Western coast, in the city of Perth.

His journey has taken him 9,000 miles across the globe. Next is a contest with Taiwan’s Yao Yi Ma (15-2-1, 10 KOs), in his first fight for an international belt.

A tenacious orthodox, boxer-fighter, who carries a solid left-hook and infighting skills. He dropped a controversial decision on his debut to Sam Hogan and again, in his fourth contest, to Renato Oliveira. By his seventh contest he had won the West Australia State Super Middleweight Title. A professional since 2013, he has a record of 10-2, 4 KOs. He’s won eight in a row and is ready to mix it for titles in the Super Welterweight division.

I caught up with Jamie for The Grueling Truth. Here is what he had to say.

Five years based in Australia. How have you found life there?

Loving life here! Started my own business just so I can be flexible with training. But, it’s still hard–working and training. I’d love to be able just to train full time and get my recovery after. Instead of going to cut someone’s tree down. But that’s life and it pays the bills.

Do you miss Wales?

I do miss Wales but more the fact my friends and family. Wish it wasn’t a 20-hour flight away.

Tell us a bit about where you train and your trainer?

Before I moved out here my dad went and ‘teed up’ Lacey’s Boxing Gym ready for when I got here and I’ve been there since. Justin (Lacey) is a great coach, he knows boxing, knows how to box and done great bringing me back to the basics. Which has added to my ability and I’ll just keep getting better.

How is the boxing scene in Perth?

The boxing scene here in Perth isn’t that great, the shows are good. It just costs too much flying the opponents into Perth.

In Wales, as a professional, you need to sell tickets to cover your purse and your opponents (if you’re the home fighter). How does it work in Australia?

Like back in Wales, we’ve got to sell tickets to cover the opponent and me not being from here–it’s a little harder to sell tickets.

You’ve gone eight fights unbeaten. Which fight has been your best win and which has been your toughest?

I’m on a win streak and that’s all that will be happening. The loses on my record weren’t deserved. But hey, I won’t cry over ‘spilled milk’. Eight fights unbeaten, soon to be nine, with an IBF Pan Pacific title wrapped around my waste. I don’t really have a best win–I’ve had a few nice knockouts. I’ve had some good eight round fights, showing different tactics and sticking to the game plan. Which, is something I’ve always struggled with, as I don’t listen in the corner too well (laughs). That’s changed! So yeah, every fight is my best. My second to last fight, against a journeyman Paitoon Jaikom, was a hard fight. I was dropping bombs on him; bust both hands up and he caught me sweet. My vision was all blurred for the last three rounds. I could still see him, I just kept them hands tight and boxed, he was tough as they come…Fair play.

I know you pop back to Wales sometimes. Would you be interested in fighting there? Maybe, for a Welsh title?

I pop back to Wales now and then, I’d love to fight and add the Welsh title to my collection. I was a Welsh amateur champion, so being a professional champion would be class.

When is your next fight and who is it against?

I’m fighting December 1st, here, in Perth for an IBF Pan Pacific title. The ‘kiddy’ I’m fighting is Yao Yi Ma. He’s tough and comes to fight, so, it’s looking to be a great matchup for the fans.

Anyone you would like to call out?

All I want is the best to stop protecting the ‘0’ and grow a pair and let’s get it on.

I’d like to fight Tim Tszyu (7-0), early next year, and Anthony Buttigieg (13-0); who has the Commonwealth title. I’d happily fight in their backyard and do the business.

How can people get hold of tickets?

This Dragon Fire show on December 1st, at Metro City, Perth is going to be epic! That big red belt’s coming home with me! If anyone’s wanting tickets message me on Facebook. Your support is amazing, as without you fans coming and supporting me–I wouldn’t be able to fight. So, please stick with me because I’m taking nothing less than a World title! I promise you that!

Do you have a message for your supporters?

My team–family, friends, sponsors, sparring partners: Without you lot, it wouldn’t be possible! Thank you very much for your loyal support! I love you all! Weetchy.
