On Saturday night, former Middleweight champion Daniel “Danny” Jacobs, (33-2 29 KO’S) scored a twelve-round decision over the tough Luis Arias (18-1 9 KO’S). This was Jacobs’ first fight since losing a razor-thin decision to unified middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG” Golovkin. The judges’ scorecards read as followed, 120-107, 119-108 and 118-108. All in favor of the “Miracle Man.”
The Brooklyn native wasted no time proving that he was back. Jacobs stunned Arias in the opening stanza with a right hand that led to Arias tackling Jacobs.
After several rounds of dominating the young challenger, “The Miracle Man” really seemed to pick up the pace in the seventh as he used angles, good defense and a powerful right hand to frustrate, stun and annoy the undefeated Arias. In round ten, Arias seemed to be on wobbly legs as Jacobs continued to press the action, landing his power shots at will. Finally, in round eleven, Jacobs switched southpaw and was able to land a beautiful left hook that forced Arias’ glove to graze the canvas.
While the Milwaukee born Arias did seem to have some success landing good shots to the head and body of Jacobs. it was ultimately the jab, power and experience of the Miracle Man that was just too much for the lesser experienced Arias.
After the fight Jacobs said, “He realized he could hurt Arias early on and was going for the knockout.” After being inactive for 8-9 months, Jacobs said, “I want to stay active, and fight whoever is willing to step up. We will invade Canada, so they can see my face.” Jacobs is referencing the showdown between Billy Jo Saunders and David Lemieux scheduled for next month in Canada. With a talent packed middleweight division, Jacobs should have plenty of opportunities to get another title shot in the near future.
