The biggest fight in xoxing between superstars Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez will be fought in Las Vegas on September 16th. “For the best fight on the best date in boxing, there is no better venue than the T-Mobile Arena,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman, and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Fans won’t only be treated to a classic battle between the two best boxers in the sport, they will also be able to enjoy an incredible week of activities marking Mexican Independence Day. This will be a can’t-miss event for hardcore and casual fans, alike.”
De La Hoya also went on to state that the venue was chosen for the “entertainment factor.”
“People want to go to parties after the fight,” added the Hall of Famer, who also stated that he will open closed-circuit venues in Sin City for the fight, as he did for Canelo’s May 6 fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.Β “You also want to stage the pre-fight parties, the weigh-ins.”
Let’s face it, this fight was going to be held nowhere else but Vegas, and if this was about fight fans, why would the fight not have been held in Dodger Stadium or Jerry’s world in Dallas, Texas? Oscar De La Hoya has never worried about the fans, he is more interested in the bottom line. For fans, this means far fewer tickets to get a hold of for this fight. We all know the corporate world will grab the majority of tickets and the average fight fan will once again be left out.
De La Hoya last week ripped Dana White and called Mayweather and McGregor a sham, but what do you call what Oscar pulled off when he matched a limited Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. against his golden pony Alvarez? Boxing is having a good year so far, but this was an opportunity to put the biggest fight in front of 100,000 fans in Dallas or Los Angeles. Instead, the fight will be in Vegas! If you saw the spectacleΒ of 90,000 fight fans in England for Joshua-Klitschko you know the atmosphere was electric. Imagine the same spectacleΒ on American soil? Instead, we get the same old same old fight in Vegas. This event could have been special for boxing, and while the fight still may be, I think that Golden Boy Promotions just struck out if they are trying to make us believeΒ they care about fight fans.
