The name Darren Sutherland will be forever synonymous with Irish boxing. Around the mid 2000’s he and his team mates eventually smashed the dreaded tag of ‘nearly men’ and at the Beijing Olympics of 2008 they won Ireland’s first Olympic medals since the unforgettable scenes in Barcelona 1992 almost 16 years previously when Wayne McCullough and Micheal Carruth took silver and gold.

Subsequently his promising professional career opened out before the boxing worlds eyes – only to be stopped before it ever truly began.

In this little tribute – Ciaran McIvor of Boxing Bant’s joins me to talk about his upcoming documentary – where he looks back at Darren’s life – speaks to his team mates and former coach.

Safe to say Darren Sutherland will forever live in the memories of those who were lucky to watch him fight. And for those who weren’t so lucky – hopefully this short tribute and Ciaran’s upcoming documentary will give a good insight into one of the greatest to wear that Irish vest.
