9 Things We Learned with Golovkin-Canelo

What we learned about Golovkin and Alvarez

What happened Saturday night in Las Vegas was nothing short of criminal. The biggest boxing event in years was ruined by a disgraceful decision that, in my opinion, is one of the worst in a big fight that I have ever seen. So what did we learn in this fight?

1) Adalaide Byrd is a disgrace to the sport of boxing

Byrd has a long history of bad decisions. She has been so bad that Vasyl Lomachenko protested when she was assigned to do his fight with Nicholas Walters. She has been a disgrace to all combat sports as she has even screwed up the decision in multiple MMA matches also. Why would the NSAC assign her to this fight? Your guess is as good as mine, but it sure looks fishy if you know what I mean? (Rematch).

2) Gennady Golovkin may not be in his prime, but he is not far from it

GGG was being questioned as to whether he was over the hill after his last performance, a close decision win over Daniel Jacobs. Saturday night he didn’t look over the hill as over the last eight rounds he imposed his will on his much younger opponent. In all reality Jacobs is a very good fighter, who’s style will always give Golovkin trouble.

3) Max Kellerman may be married to Canelo

Kellerman was so biased during the broadcast it was sickening. Sometimes it seems like Max is seeing an entirely different fight than everyone else.

4) HBO made the right call on the start time

Starting the PPV at 8pm Eastern Time and making sure the fight started close to eleven o’clock was something that boxing has needed to do for years. Hopefully this is a trend that will continue.

5) You can’t win a fight backing up, but you can get a draw

My whole problem with the decision is that from the start of the 4th round to the end of the ninth round Canelo constantly backed up to the ropes and Golovkin was the effective aggressor. It also seemed that in those rounds Canelo resorted to throwing mainly one shot a time. So to me that was six clear rounds for Golovkin. To get a draw that means you had to score every other round to Canelo, and I don’t see how that is possible as I thought Golovkin clearly won round one.

6) Golovkin’s jab was the true difference in the fight

Triple-G controlled the fight with his jab and that’s why I had him winning the fight 116-112. The punch stats back this assertion, as well.

7) Both fighters showed they are truly great champions

I thought they were both excellent fighters entering the bout, but I had doubts about both of them. To me, all of those doubts were answered as both faced adversity and kept coming.

8) If you scored the fight for Canelo, you obviously picked him to win before the fight

Face it, if you picked Canelo to win before the fight and still had him winning after you are just a Canelo fan that judged the fight with your heart. I really don’t see how any knowledgeable boxing fan can think Canelo won this fight?

9) I want to see the rematch

The rematch could be an even better fight as each knows what the other can do now. With that being said, I would pick Triple-G again to win and I think it would be easier. If Golovkin would have went to the body earlier in the fight I think he may have stopped Canelo. The other advantage for Golovkin is in his corner where Abel Sanchez resides as his trainer, which I think is a big leg up. With youth on Canelo’s side there is still doubt what would happen in the rematch.

Tonight boxing fans got a very good fight. The hype about the Mayweather-McGregor slap-fest was getting on all “real” boxing fans’ nerves and tonight we got our reward from having to put up with all the Money fight bullshit and in the end it was worth the wait, and I can’t wait for the rematch!
