The Week in College Basketball (3/9/20)

A look at what happened

1) Kansas looks like the best team right now

Wins over TCU and Texas Tech were impressive and they are rolling with a star in Udoka Azubuike. This may be the most complete team in all of college basketball and they will be a tough out for everybody come tournament time.

2) Dayton is on the verge of a number one seed

Obi Toppin is a bad dude and now with San Diego State getting upset in their conference tournament, it looks like a conference tournament championship will end up putting Dayton number one line on selection Sunday. The Flyers CAN win a National Championship!

3) Archie Miller makes a fool out of himself

Sure by now we are used to Archie looking foolish as he tries to coach, but now he looks like a fool in post-game press conferences also. After Saturday blowing a 9-point, second-half lead against Wisconsin Archie decided to go off on bracketology expert Joe Lunardi. Really? After a devastating loss that may have knocked his team out of March Madness, Archie still feels like he needs to go after Lunardi. Maybe Coach Miller needs to worry more about the job he is doing more than anything else. If he was he would not need to worry about what a bracketologist says.

4) Maybe it’s time for more mid-majors to get in

Yesterday we saw teams like Indiana, Xavier, Marquette, and Texas Tech, just to name a few, come up short over the weekend when winning a game could have locked it up for them. Maybe instead of taking the tenth or eleventh best team in the Big Ten maybe it’s time to take the second-best team out of some smaller conferences?

5) Northern Iowa belongs in the Tournament

Heck, throw in East Tennessee State as well! I would much rather watch one of these two teams get a shot than an N.C. State or Indiana. We already know the Wolfpack and Hoosiers are not good enough to do that much, but with ETSU and Northern Iowa at least we have some mystery! The NCAA Tournament was built off Cinderella stories, so give the people what they want!

6) San Diego State is not deserving of a one seed

Now I will change this opinion if a one seed or two loses this week, but let’s face it, the Aztecs don’t have a resume of a one seed. While saying that I would like to point out that I believe the Aztecs are a serious Final 4 contender. I just think at right this moment, the way things stand, they are more of a number 2 seed.

7) I am not sure what to think about Kentucky

A week or two ago I thought they were primed to make a run. What I think now is that the ceiling is Sweet 16 unless they can get a very favorable draw and even then they just have been up and down so much it will be hard to trust them when it comes time to fill out your brackets.

8) Tony Bennett may be the best coach in the country

I watched the Cavaliers play Notre Dame a month or so ago and it struck me how painful it was to watch both teams. Fast forward a month and Notre Dame is still painful to watch, while Virginia has all of the sudden won 8-straight games and look like a contender again. How did this happen? Very simply coaching!
