The fact that San Diego State got upset had to be a little expected as it’s hard to go undefeated in any conference, but the fact it was UNLV was shocking. I still believe the Aztecs have the talent to make a deep run in the Tournament but it probably won’t be as a one seed now.
The Flyers and Jayhawks each have a stud player that can put their respective teams on their back come March Madness, but they are also complete teams with relatively few weaknesses. Plus if you saw these teams play each other during the holidays a rematch for a National Championship would not be a bad game to watch.
The Big East has been loaded since the start of the season but Creighton, Seton Hall, and Villanova are starting to look more and more like Final 4 contenders. The Bluejays are playing as good as anybody in the country as of late; Seton Hall had hit a little bit of a swoon but look backwards; and Villanova, Coached by Jay Wright, is as good defensively as anybody in the country. I expect at least one of the teams to be playing in Atlanta in a little over a month.
Michigan started the season out blazing and then almost as quickly went the other direction, but times have changed and the Wolverines have won seven of their last eight games, including road wins at Purdue and Rutgers in Week 16, which should get them back in the rankings again. Juwan Howard has done a great job with this team and if they are totally healthy then they can beat anybody.
Archie Miller has been under a microscope at Indiana since he accepted the Hoosiers job. Now he is proving he can do the job as this team has changed the way they play defense and it is working. Race Thompson has been a huge addition by getting a lot more playing time as of late. The Hoosiers go 8-10 deep and get 38 percent of their scoring from that bench. If the Hoosiers go to Purdue and win I think it will be safe to say the Hoosiers may be on to something.
It’s hard to argue against this since the Cougars just buried the Bulldogs by 13 points this past weekend. I really think this Gonzaga team has been overrated this year. With that being said, Mark Few has done a great job this season with this team, but they seem ripe for an early upset in the Tournament this season.
