That the top three teams in the country halfway through February would be Baylor, San Diego State, Gonzaga, Kansas, and Dayton? Kansas and Gonzaga would probably be believable, but the other three were not expected. Baylor as a top-20? Okay, but top-3? San Diego State is undefeated, would you have believed that? San Diego State is a legitimate threat to run the table and go undefeated. If you don’t believe it, well then you have not watched them play! Dayton proved early in the season that they were going to be tough to deal with. If you watched Baylor dismantle a good West Virginia team by double-digits I don’t have to convince you about them.
A 94-60 win over Notre Dame was the Blue Devils’ seventh-straight win and Coach K is the deciding factor here as the team is starting to improve at a rapid rate and could make another deep March run.
After a rough start to his first season at UCLA, Mick Cronin’s Bruins are 7-2 in their last 9 games and have a shot at a regular-season PAC 12 Title. The Bruins will not last long if they make the tournament but in his first season as the Bruins’ head man he has done a very good job and nobody seems to be noticing.
Penn State could win the Big Ten and they just might make a run at a Final Four bid! Penn State won the NIT two years ago and last year, instead of building off it, fell back to being your typical Penn State basketball team. That has all changed this year and the Nittany Lions are not just a football school anymore. Well, at least until the basketball season is over, then they will be a football school again.
The Pirates have won just 2 of their past 5 games and slow starts have killed them in losses to unranked Xavier and Providence. The Pirates are still a very good team and I am sure they will get it ironed out quickly but their seed for the tournament is slipping and they need to right the ship quickly.
