The Indiana Hoosiers saw their season come to an abrupt end with a 29 point loss to the Saint Marys Gaels on Thursday night. Yes, I will say that Saint Marys is a better team; you can figure that out if you watched both teams all year. The issue is how the NCAA conducts business, and isn’t that always an issue? I have no problems with the first four; my issue is when it’s played? The selection show is on Sunday afternoon, and the first four is played on a Tuesday and a Wednesday! So the Indiana Hoosiers played three straight nail-biting games in the Big Ten Tournament, and the last one was on a Saturday, and then they were expected to play again on Tuesday night in Dayton against Wyoming. That’s not too bad until you realize how far it is from Dayton to Portland, where the Hoosiers had to play after beating Wyoming. On top of that, they would be playing 36 hours after that game in Dayton. To make matter worse, the plane they were supposed to fly on was not big enough for the Indiana contingent, so they waited for four hours on the plane, and they finally left at 4 am.
The NCAA is in charge of the transportation of the teams, and each team sends in a list of how many people will be flying, the Hoosiers did that, and the plane was still too small! How can that happen with a corporation as big as the NCAA? So by the time Indiana got to Portland, they were less than 36 hours from having to play the game; that is absolutely foolish! It would seem to me that you wouldn’t want to give any team a competitive advantage, but the NCAA does all the time. Why not play the first four the weekend after the conference tournaments and then play the first round the following Thursday and Friday? Or how about making it, so the conference tournaments end on Friday night and the selection show on a Saturday. That would give teams the time to prepare, and maybe the extra two days would allow the NCAA to get their crap together when it comes to transportation? Saint Marys had a week to rest and prepare while Indiana played four games in 6 days! Many things could be done to make everything more competitive and take away the advantages.

As a lifelong Hoosier fan, if you would have told me that this year the Hoosiers would win 21 games, beat Purdue, make it to the conference semi-finals, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. The Hoosiers became relevant at the end of the season, after six long years of not being. Coach Woodson made us all proud to be Hoosier fans again, and it will only get better from here on out! I am again angry because the NCAA constantly drops the ball and puts their money-making above the student-athletes. Once again, I don’t think the Hoosiers would have won with rest; Saint Marys is better, but this team played their hearts out at the end of the season, and they deserved a fair playing field once they got to the tournament. They didn’t, and that’s a shame, but what’s new when it comes to the inner-workings of the NCAA?
