Really mediocrity reigns supreme in college basketball and no clear favorite has emerged and there very well could be 30 teams or even more that could win it all this year. Duke lost twice this week and it seems every week the so-called big dogs go down. Include Butler losing twice this week just as it looked like they might become a favorite. The only undefeated team left is San Diego State and their schedule would normally make us not take them seriously, but who knows this year?
Everybody says how good the Big Ten is and they are deep with slightly above average teams, but can we take a league seriously when nobody, not even the top teams in the league, can win on the road? Don’t look now, but the Iowa Hawkeyes just might be the best team in the Big Ten as they have shooters and they have a huge low-post threat. We keep waiting on Cassius Winston and Michigan State to emerge but it just is not happening up to this point. Things are so messed up in the Big Ten that Rutgers looks ready to contend for the Big Ten title. Let that sink in for a minute!
Myles Powell and Seton Hall look like the best team in the Big East. While we are looking at the Pirates, we might as well add that this team, at this point in the season, is a National Title contender led by Powell, who should be the Player of the Year. Villanova keeps improving, while Butler lost at home to Seton Hall this past week and followed it up by being blown out at Depaul on Saturday. All ten teams in this league could be NCAA tournament teams. To me, when your bottom two teams are Depaul and Xavier you know that this is a deep conference.
These may be the two best teams in the country at this point. The Bears have a 13-game winning streak and the Zags have won 11-straight. Most of these teams have been of the dominant variety.
The answer to this question is simply no there is not. Pritchard is in range when he crosses the mid-court line and if you don’t believe me just ask the Washington Huskies who were his latest victim.
As I said at the start of this article it seems like this year everybody has a chance. How about this for a Final Four? San Diego State, Dayton, Seton Hall, and Iowa? Sound crazy? How about this, I think at least one of these four will be there at the end and maybe more than one.
