They say Jordan Clarkson only loves himself, but even if itβs true, Cavaliers fans should send some love to Clarkson as well as he is having a career year on a lowly roster that sits near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
Can Clarkson get a little wild at times and shoot the Cavs out of a game? Sure. Yet, Clarkson has proved time and time again that he can be a spark for the fans and for an otherwise dull team that had championship aspirations as recent as last season.
Through 25 games this season, Clarkson is posting career-highs in field goals per game (6.5) and field goals attempted per game (14.4), two-point field goals per game (4.9) and two-point field goals per game (9.7) as well as two-point field goal percentage (.508%) and free throw percentage (.855%).
To some, that may not seem like a lot. With LeBron James gone and Kevin Love out with injury, Clarkson is taking more shots (someone has to), but whatβs important is that he is making his shots at a consistent rate and is shooting .508% when taking high-percentage mid-range shots or using his speed to get to the rim.
With the Cavs in a rebuilding mode, much like Clarksonβs Lakers before he was acquired, Clarkson is able to do what he knows best: score without consequence, much like a former teammate that once donned the same jersey number Clarkson currently wears.
Averaging 16 PPG, Clarkson is fifth in sixth man scoring, once again placing his name among early Sixth Man of the Year Award candidates, for what itβs worth on a struggling team.
Rookie Guard Collin Sexton has improved significantly over the last handful of weeks (Sexton is currently ranked third in rookie scoring with 15.7 PPG, .451 3P%) and Tristan Thompson isΒ having a career-year in his own right.
The potential combination of Clarkson and Sexton scoring 15+ PPG, a rejuvenated Thompson, when he returns from his injury, providing close to 12 PPG and 12 RPG and Love from his Timberwolves days could prove to be enough to win some games in the Eastern Conference and maybe make a push for the playoffs.
However, as the team currently sits, Jordan βI Love Me Some Meβ Clarkson is the best that we have and Cleveland should show him some love because, frankly, as the teamβs leading scorer outside of Loveβs 19 PPG in four games, weβd have no other option.
