Top 10 NCAA Basketball Coaches at the end of the 2016-17 Season

10). Chris Mack, Xavier Musketeers

Mack put himself in the top ten with an absolutely brilliant coaching job this past season. The Muskies started out the season as a top ten team, but injuries and defections depleted this teams talent level. Towards the end of the regular season, the Muskies went into a tailspin losing six of the team’s last eight games and the two wins were against DePaul. The Muskies saved their season with an upset of Butler in the Big East Semi Final that got them into the tournament. Once in the Tourney, they smashed Maryland and Florida State before upsetting former coach Sean Miller’s Arizona Wildcats. If Mack stays at Xavier the Muskies will eventually end up in the Final Four.

9). Jim Boeheim, Syracuse Orangemen

The knock on him is that with the talent he has had he should have won more National Titles. While all of that is true it’s hard to deny a coach that has over 900 wins. Boeheim is on this list out of respect for how long he has kept the Orangemen program at a high level.

8). Rick Pitino, Louisville Cardinals

Pitino is a great recruiter and he certainly knows his X’s and O’s. The Recruiting scandal at Louisville drops him towards the bottom of this list. Pitino is a great coach, unfortunately, when he is through coaching I think the coaching will be overshadowed by what kind of person he has been.

7). Mark Few, Gonzaga Bulldogs

Mark Few has kept Gonzaga relevant for almost two decades now, which if you look at the history of the school before 1995 is amazing. Coach Few probably would be in the top 5 if he would have won this year’s National Title game. The Bulldogs show no sign of slowing down and it would surprise me if Few doesn’t keep moving up this list.

6). Jay Wright, Villanova Wildcats

Wright is quickly moving up this list as he has led Villanova to two Final Fours and last year’s National Championship. Wright’s teams are always prepared offensively and defensively to play and if you are going to beat them you have to be on top of your game.

5). John Calipari, Kentucky Wildcats

Calipari can most definitely recruit and he is a solid teacher of the game. I think the way he recruits may hurt him a little. I think he is a very good coach, but he doesn’t get to develop his players and his team’s because they are gone before he really can.

4). Roy Williams, North Carolina Tar Heels

One of the best offensive coaches in the country and is also a great recruiter. His teams are always well prepared, plus he won the National Championship this year also. I think it is fair to say that he could rank as high as number two on this list.

3). Bill Self, Kansas Jayhawks

Self has the second most NCAA tournament game wins in the past 12 years even though it is fair to point out his tourney struggles. He’s never been in a NIT at Kansas. He has more conference titles than home losses, which are all amazing facts. To get higher he must produce more deep tournament runs.

2). Tom Izzo, Michigan State Spartans

Izzo maybe the best coach in the country at getting the most out of his players. The most telling point to me about Izzo is this simple fact. No matter what his team’s record is you do NOT want to see Coach Izzo on the other sideline when it is tournament time.

1). Mike Krzyzewski, Duke Blue Devils

I do not think that anybody right now can even be mentioned in the same breath as Coach K.
