The Top 10 Los Angeles Dodgers of All-Time

The Top 10 Los Angeles Dodgers of All Time!

The Top 10 Los Angeles Dodgers of all-time is not an easy list to compile, from Brooklyn to Los Angeles the Dodgers have so many great players it’s hard to narrow the list down. Active players are not eligible for this list.

10) Maury Wills

Wills became the first man to steal 100 bases in a single season in 1962 while winning the NL MVP. Wills was a dodger for 12 seasons and compiled a 281 batting average with 374 RBI and franchise-leading 490 stolen bases.

9) Gil Hodges

Hodges spent 15 seasons as a Dodger and finished his career batting .274 with 361 home runs and 1,274 RBI. He was selected to 9 all-star games.

8) Mike Piazza

Let’s just say defense was not Piazza’s specialty, but offensively he may have been the greatest catcher ever. Piazza spent seven years with the Dodgers (1992-98), where he won the 1993 NL Rookie of the Year. He was also named to six straight All-Star teams and won six straight Silver Sluggers. The defense was spotty at best but you can’t deny what he did with the bat.

7) Steve Garvey

Garvey had six 200-hit seasons, won the 1974 NL MVP, and was named to eight All-Star teams while with the Dodgers. He also won four Gold Gloves at first base. Garvey was a Dodger for 14 seasons and in that time batted .301, with 211 home runs and 992 RBI.

6) Orel Hershiser

Hershiser’s epic 1988 season and Postseason puts him on this list. Everybody remembers the postseason run but the regular season was epic as well as Hershiser won the NL Cy Young in 1988, going 23-8 with 2.26 ERA and 208 strikeouts. That year, he led the league in wins, complete games (15), shutouts (8), innings pitched (267) and batter’s faced (1,068). The postseason though was that of legend. The Mets were heavily favored to beat the Dodgers and Hershiser put the team on his back and willed them to the World Series.

Hershiser started Games 1 and 3 of the NLCS against the New York Mets and picked up the save in Game 4. He then pitched a shutout in Game 7 and was selected the NLCS MVP. Then, in the World Series against the heavily favored A’s Hershiser pitched a shutout in Game 2 and had a complete-game win in Game 5, to clinch the series.

5) Don Drysdale

Drysdale, like the great Sandy Koufax, Drysdale’s career was cut short by an injury, but his numbers and legacy are still legendary. Drysdale compiled a record of 209-166 with a 2.95 ERA and 2,486 strikeouts. One can only wonder without a bad shoulder what Drysdale’s final numbers would have been.

4) Duke Snider

When you are in the title of a song with Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle you know you are good. Snider batted .300 with 389 home runs and 1,271 RBI. Snider’s best stretch from 1950-57, Snider batted .307 with 288 home runs and 885 RBI, marking the best eight seasons of his career.

3) Jackie Robinson

If we were just judging on historical importance Robinson would be number one. Robinson was courageous to be able to handle what he was put through and his numbers were amazing In 10 years with Brooklyn, Jackie compiled a .311 batting average with 137 home runs and 734 RBI. Robinson won the NL Rookie of the Year in 1947 and the NL MVP in 1949. He was also selected for six All-Star games. From 1949-51, Robinson batted .336 with 49 home runs and 293 RBI, which was the best three-year stretch of his career.

2) Roy Campanella

Campanella was one of the greatest catchers in baseball history and the greatest Dodgers catcher of all time. Campanella won three MVP awards during his ten-year career with the Dodgers and was selected to eight all-star teams in that span.

1). Sandy Koufax

Koufax’s career ended prematurely because of arthritis in his elbow, but he was one of the greatest pitchers of all time, and he was a stud in the clutch. He compiled a career record of 165-87 with a 2.76 ERA and 2,396 strikeouts. Koufax won the NL Cy Young awards in 1963, 1965, and 1966, while also winning the NL MVP in 1963. From 1962-66 (the last five years of his career), Koufax led the league in ERA each year, averaging a 1.95 mark over that span.
