The 2018 Boston Red Sox are officially one of the best teams in major league history. The Sox capped their historic regular season with a five-game World Series victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. While there were several heroes on this fantastic road, first baseman Steve Pearcewas chief among them. Because of his postseason heroics, Pearce officially earned the World Series Most Valuable Player award.
First Baseman Steve Pearce Wins World Series MVP
To say Steve Pearce had a good World Series is an understatement. The slugging first baseman was the best offensive bat on the team, going 4-for-16 with three home runs and eight runs batted in over the five-game series.
While he was great all the time, his bat came through in the biggest moments. During Game Four, Pearce launched a solo shot in the top of the eighth to tie the game, 4-4. For good measure, Pearce added a three-run double in the top of the ninth to give the Red Sox a 9-4 lead they would not relinquish.
While he was the most important factor in the Red Sox Game Four victory, he was just as big in Game Five. Pearce led off the top of the first with a two-run homer to give the Red Sox another lead they would not relinquish. He wasn’t done there, as Pearce hit yet another home run in the top of the eighth to give the Red Sox a 5-1 lead. While that run didn’t make much of a difference in the long run, it served as the final nail in the Dodgers coffin. While Nathan Eovaldi and David Price were phenomenal, it’s hard to argue that either deserved this award more than the first baseman.
Amazingly, Pearce didn’t even start the 2018 season on the Red Sox roster. Originally a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, Pearce was traded to the Red Sox on June 29th for infielder Santiago Espinal, then the 15th-ranked prospect in the Red Sox farm system.
Since joining the Red Sox, Price posted a .279/.394/.507 slash line with a 143 wRC+. He was a major player in a Red Sox offense which struggled against lefty pitching for a portion of the season. To say he was worth the investment is a major understatement. The Red Sox are World Series champions, and Steve Pearce is a deserving MVP.
