The right fielder for Oakland, Ramón Laureano, could be heard yelling in the dugout before the rally, giving what appeared to be an emotional speech. The first base umpire, Paul Emmel, tossed him out of the game in the middle of the seventh inning.

“Ramon is passionate,” Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. “That’s the Ramón I’ve always talked about.”

In addition, Oakland’s Sean Murphy, Christian Bettancourt, and Steven Vogt all hit home runs, and Vogt also collected three hits and was hit by a pitch.

During their longest losing streak since the A’s dropped 10 games in a row from May 30 to June 9, 2011, Oakland was outscored 60-20. The team lost nine times in a row from April 29 to May 8 this year, the first time the A’s had gone nine games without a win since 1978.

Game highlights

For the first time since April 18, Baltimore, Frankie Montas (3-6) earned a win by allowing five runs and eight hits over six innings. Despite having a 2.87 ERA, he had been 0-5 across his previous nine starts.

Oakland had rallied from a 5-2 deficit when Brown blasted a full-count fastball from Eli Morgan with two outs. Brown took a 2-2 pitch that Morgan thought was a strike three, and he bounded off the mound. Brown hit his first career slam with the next pitch, sending it into the right-field seats. A critical hit by José Ramirez, followed by an impressive rush around the bases, helped erase the Athletics’ 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. A throwing error, an RBI groundout, a sacrifice fly, and a run-scoring bunt hit contributed to Cleveland’s four runs.

Vogt and Matt Davidson each single off Zach Plesac to start the sixth. First baseman Josh Naylor’s throwing blunder on Tony Kemp’s ground ball enabled the runner to score and cost the Guardians an out. Morgan (2-2) struck out.

Before Brown delivered the blow that silenced the stadium and caused Oakland’s players to leap from the dugout in celebration, Bethancourt’s infield hit with two outs kept the inning alive.

The play that Plesac made when he threw Cristian Pache out at first was the best one of the day. The slow roller that was hit to the right of the mound was caught by Plesac using only his bare hands.
